Acclaimed author Emma Newman returns to the captivating universe she created in Planetfall with a stunning science fiction mystery where one mans murder is much more than it seems... Govcorp detective Carlos Moreno was only a baby when Atlas left Earth to seek truth among the stars. But in that moment, the course of Carloss entire life changed. Atlas is what took his mother away; what made his father lose hope; what led Alejandro Casales, leader of the religious cult known as the Circle, to his door. And now, on the eve of the fortieth anniversary of Atlass departure, its got something to do why Casales was found dead in his hotel roomand why Carlos is the man in charge of the investigation. To figure out who killed one of the most powerful men on Earth, Carlos is supposed to put aside his personal history. But the deeper he delves into the case, the more he realizes that escaping the past is not so easy. Theres more to Casaless death than meets the eye, and something much more sinister to the legacy of Atlas than anyone realizes... From the Trade Paperback edition.

This author knows how to write an ending! I had been told I could read these our of order and this is so different from the first novel, Planetfall. This is on Earth and is more of a murder mystery in an era of great scarcity, corporate slavery, and magnified artificial intelligence linking people and working as assistants.⤵️

ReadingEnvy Carlos is the son of the ship captain who led the trip off the planet but to survive is indebted to a corporation. Luckily he is a skilled investigator. There are some pieces especially near the end that tie back to book one but the ending of that one has remained unresolved. 5y

Wow, this book is like a punch in the gut. Emma Newman is a real master at portraying characters who are still dealing with the aftershocks of trauma, and in showing how trauma can keep coming back to you. The technology and environment in this was so well-developed, and the mystery very well-plotted. Similar to the first book in the series, the ending seemed to come out of nowhere. But definitely plan to read more in Planetfall!

5/5⭐ Emma Newman's ability to craft a story just blows my mind. She weaves in the futuristic tech seamlessly so we don't just understand what exists but the context in which it's used. This feature is especially important when shit hits the fan & I, as a reader, feel the exact impact it has on the characters. At one point about 3/4 in the main character was basically going “WTF? WTF?!?!?!“ & I was caught up WTFing right w/ him. So goddamn perfect.

ahhhhhhhhhhhh WHAT JUST HAPPENED? Can‘t tell whether to give this three or five stars. (So, I guess, 4, which given the plot twists in the last 40 pages MIGHT BE GENEROUS. ... or might not be enough!) Mystery fans may enjoy this one ... but the mystery is secondary to the #sciencefiction plot. W o w I need the sequel (& luckily, a fourth book in the Planetfall series is coming out April 16!).

A mystery that is - so far! - focused on a couple of people left behind from the mission to Mars that we heard about in Planetfall. Reminds me as it is no doubt supposed to of Isaac Asimov‘s SF mysteries (Caves of Steel, Naked Sun) but with a lot of fascinating overlays about the potential near future. #sciencefiction #mystery

suzisteffen Holy shit this book has my heart pounding. Not as much as Planetfall did, but Planetfall was FREAKING TERRIFYING. 6y

My ridiculous #BookOutlet order has arrived. Thankfully I still have empty shelf space after the move, a culling, and buying new shelves.

That is one hell of an ending. Talk about packing a punch.

I felt less emotionally involved than with the first book, but enjoyed this a lot all the same.

Book 2 of Planetfall series picks up 40 years after Atlas has left Earth in search of God. Carlos, left behind by his mother when he was a baby, is now a government sanctioned (owned) detective with the Ministry of Justice. The first half of the book is almost entirely his solving a murder of a prominent figure. Then it all slows way down until the last 10% when it all goes bananas. The ending is b-a-n-a-n-a-s! Loving this series so far! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
