A Civil Contract | Georgette Heyer
6 posts | 9 read | 7 to read
"A five-star job of sheerly delightful romance writing."- Chicago Sunday Tribune Can the wrong bride become the perfect wife? Adam Deveril, the new Viscount Lynton, is madly in love with the beautiful Julia Oversley. But he has returned from the Peninsular War to find his family on the brink of ruin and his ancestral home mortgaged to the hilt. He has little choice when he is introduced to Mr. Jonathan Chawleigh, a City man of apparently unlimited wealth and no social ambitions for himself-but with his eyes firmly fixed on a suitable match for his only daughter, the quiet and decidedly plain Jenny Chawleigh. What Readers Say: "Heyer always writes brilliantly and is capable of conveying the deepest emotions in the briefest of phrases and subtlest dialogue." "One of Heyer's most skillfully written novels." "Has all of Heyer's usual wit, vivid characters, and attention to detail." "One of my very favourite Heyers - and one of her most profound. Wise and heartwarming." "Thoughtful and thought-provoking ... reveals depths to Heyer's writing." "Truly a gem." Georgette Heyer wrote over fifty novels, including Regency romances, mysteries, and historical fiction. She was known as the Queen of Regency romance, and was legendary for her research, historical accuracy, and her extraordinary plots and characterizations.

mabell They all sound good! 1y
mabell Maybe Lord Sidley‘s? But really any would be good! 1y
TheAromaofBooks Like @mabell I'm leaning towards Lord Sidley's, but I'm up for any of them!! I've read both the Heyers and Edenbrooke, but loved all three of them (those are actually two of my favorite Heyers) so I am totally down for a reread of one of them if that's how it plays out!! 1y
julieclair These all sound good, and I haven‘t read any of them. 1y

Pickpick

When I was a tween I loved Georgette Heyer so when this book came up as a Kindle deal I had to buy it. Not my favourite but a pleasure to read , set during the tail end of the Napoleonic Wars , Adam finds himself heir to an estate teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. The only way to save the family is to marry an heiress, Jenny, a plain practical woman, nothing like Julia his lovely neighbour. What follows is predictable, #romantsy

CindyMyLifeIsLit Georgette Heyer is one of my favorite authors!! Her books have so much humor and her writing is exquisite!! Her sentences flow like silk—her syntax is so polished!! ❤️❤️❤️ 6y
Dragon Thanks @CindyMyLifeIsLit I totally agree. I love the dialogue and her use of period language/slang. Her historical detail ! 👍😀🐉 6y
EloisaJames I adore her but my romantic teenage self hated this book so much that I‘ve never reread it. I‘ll give it a try! 6y

Dragon Thanks @EloisaJames this book is not as funny or romantic as her other book. Jenny is a bit dowdy a bit dull and settles for a more prosaic love. But I think a lasting love. 6y
EloisaJames @Dragon probably why I loathed it so much—a touch more reality than I appreciated. 6y
Dragon Thanks @EloisaJames 😂👍🐉 6y

Mehso-so

This one fell a little flat for me. It was still a nice comfort read, but I didn't find many laugh-out-loud moments. Read only after you've given The Grand Sophy, Frederica, Venetia, Cotillion, and These Old Shades a try.
