An interesting look at travel on ships for women across the years. I liked all the stories about the various women especially Violet Jessop. Detailed and interesting. 3*

An interesting read about women and their stories on these long voyages.
A fascinating & focused history women‘s roles aboard the massive ships of the twentieth century, the bulk of the book covers the years between the world wars- though it also includes the wars & a bit before and after. Evans features women in various roles- like the unsinkable stewardess, Violet- but also Edith Sowerbutts who devoted her career as a conductress aiding emigrating women & children. From passengers to nurses, the book touches it all!
I was pleasantly surprised by this fascinating look into the golden age (1920s-40s) of ocean liners and women‘s roles onboard. Before flight, these giants were the only way of travel, and there were a myriad of reasons passengers flocked to them…escaping economic desperation, PR for various careers, fleeing persecution/violence, or simply for pleasure. This author did an excellent job of describing the hierarchy aboard ship and women‘s 🔻
