Who can you trust when corruption and danger are a way of life? The CIA never left Latin America, and is facing catastrophic blackmail at the hands of an erratic Guatemalan drug lord: the infamous patrn of Antigua - Pablo Puentes. Desperate for a swift solution, the agency calls in their black operative fixer: John Carpenter.? John is a cold-blooded professional ready for the job. But the mission doesn't have a simple fix. Pablo has a disastrous kill switch in place. John is still haunted by the mysterious death of his best friend who died on a far too similar mission, and now is uncertain about how much he can trust his handler or his sensual partner.? Back at the agency, tensions are running hot as the stench of corruption is growing to a boiling point. If things aren't put to rights - and soon - the entire mission will go up in flames and take the CIA down with it. Only John Carpenter can bring this drug lord to justice and get the answers he deserves. Because this mission is personal... "If you like the relentless tension of Daniel Silva and the gritty reality of Lee Child then you'll love this first book in the John Carpenter Trilogy!" Visit his website at CollinGlavac.com

I like thrillers. I like for thrillers to be thrilling. This debut novel didn‘t become thrilling until about halfway through the book. So the bad news is that the first half is boring and somewhat unbelievable. The good news is that the second half is full of action, saving it from a so-so rating. I learned little except a few geography lessons about #Guatemala for #foodandlit. If it is to believed, the country is drug ridden, corrupt, & ⬇️

Texreader plagued by sex trafficking. True? I have no idea. Of course, the subtext hints that the CIA is as well, leaving it open to book 2 and 3 of this trilogy. Not sure I‘m willing to stick around to find out. (edited) 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick It's true, sadly. A friend's parents used to split their time between USA & Guatemala but stopped going back a few years ago as it was getting really bad. 3y
Texreader @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Very sad. My niece‘s husband is from Guatemala but I haven‘t met him yet. When I do I guess I‘ll ask him. May not be the best ice breaker however 3y

Finally, halfway through this “action-thriller” I‘m finally seeing some action. Unfortunately, it‘s lacking the thriller component. 💤 Big-time snooze fest, so I‘m reading it to help me fall asleep. #foodandlit #Guatemala @Catsandbooks @Butterfinger

I‘ve said it before and I‘ll say it again this “action-thriller” is so slow. This is an excellent example of what our super-spy assassin is up to. Honestly? It makes me want to snooze. And he‘s only been “tranquil” so far and I‘m halfway through it—I have no reason to believe it‘s “foreign to his being.”

Struggling to pick it up to finish it but I‘m really compelled to try to finish it because it‘s my book for #Guatemala for #foodandlit.

Teresereading Mmmm...... 3y

This “thriller” is so slow—too much dialog (both external and internal), which isn‘t terribly realistic. But I want to finish it for #foodandlit this month. So in the rare instances that something actually happens, I google what I can. Currently the main character is en route to a town on Lake Atitlan, #Guatemala

TheAromaofBooks Oh! I've actually been to Lake Atitlan. It's stunningly beautiful. 3y
Texreader @TheAromaofBooks how cool! The book describes the lake as the most beautiful in the world. 3y
BarbaraBB I‘ve been there too. It‘s beautiful but the most beautiful 🤔? @TheAromaofBooks 3y
TheAromaofBooks haha I'm sure many places claim that title!! 😂 I'm not sure I could make that kind of judgment call. But watching the sun come up around those mountains (including San Pedro, volcano!), surrounded by greenery & butterflies, it at least has to be up there!! @BarbaraBB where did you stay when you visited? We actually crossed the lake from Panajachel & stayed near Santiago Atitlan. 3y
BarbaraBB @TheAromaofBooks That sounds great! I was in Panajachel watching it but didn‘t cross it! 3y

“They had a stunning view of all three of Antigua‘s volcanoes: Volcán de Agua, the ‘Volcano of Water‘; Volcán de Fuego, the ‘Volcano of Fire‘; and Acatenango, translating roughly as ‘wall of reeds‘ or ‘reeds of corn‘.”

Libby1 Antigua, Guatemala is stunningly beautiful. ❤️ 3y
Texreader @Libby1 You‘ve been there? Do you have any photos? The main character refers to how dusty it is. Is that true? 3y

Whoopsie. How can she put on the shoes she just stuffed in the backpack? In the same paragraph no less.

EadieB Maybe they are talking about 2 different pair of shoes as the author calls one pair her “new“ heels. Is the pair stuffed in the backpack her flats or trainers? (edited) 3y
Texreader @EadieB If so the author didn‘t make it clear. I kept rereading it to figure it out. But that‘s how I decided to interpret it, too. 3y
EadieB @Texreader I think if the author was referring to one pair of shoes she would use the same term but she used 👟 shoes and heels 👠 . 3y

I love googling to see places where a main character visits, such as this the Arco de Santa Catalina in Antigua, Guatemala. In the distance is the inactive volcano Volcán de Agua.
