The Age of Reinvention
The Age of Reinvention | Karine Tuil
4 posts | 6 read | 10 to read
An international bestseller and finalist for the Prix Goncourt; a suspenseful tale of a tangled love triangle in the long shadow of the war on terror. Manhattan attorney Sam Tahar appears to have it all: fame, fortune, an enviable marriage to a prominent socialite, and two children. But his charmed life is built on a lie - he isn't the person he pretends to be. As the son of a Tunisian immigrant growing up in a grimy Paris tower block, Samir Tahar seemed destined to stay on the margins - until he decided to 'cut through the bars of his social jail cell, even if he had to do it with his teeth'. At law school, he became friends with Jewish student Samuel Baron. The two were inseparable until the irresistible Nina, torn between the men, chose Samuel. Samir fled to America, where he assumed Samuel's identity while his former friend remained trapped in a French suburb, a failed writer seething at Samir's triumphs. Years later, the three meet again and Samir's carefully constructed existence is blown apart, with disastrous consequences. The Age of Reinvention is a smart, captivating story about the temptations and terrible costs of remaking oneself. 'A work of great magnitude. It delves into and embraces the complexity of our modern world, mixes it up, describes, dissects and, finally, helps us to understand it. Brimming with ideas, original, compulsive' Le Figaro 'Stolen identities, social ambition, and suspense: Karine Tuil triumphs with this masterful novel...Unquestionably one of the season's best' Paris Match 'Karine Tuil's energy and inventiveness never flag. A distinctive and powerful work' French Elle

Pickpick

I was a little hesitant to finish this book. The layout is like a long essay, with run-on sentences, and had little breaks to show dialogue, and had footnotes (to me this was distracting and served no real purpose that added to the story).

In the end this book was complex, encompassed many themes, such as: success, betrayal, religion, and culture.

*Trigger Warning - this book does include scenes with sexual violence/assault.

DeborahSmall @ScorpioBookDreams they look great. Thanks. I have a parcel ready for you @LeahBergen too. The update on Mary is that she will go into hospice tomorrow. She's deteriorating quickly and is very confused. She just came out of the bathroom completely naked and was still naked when I put nebuliser on. 🙈 don't know whether to laugh or cry!! My brother in law coming early. If she's still in bed he's in for a shock. 😂 I'm so relieved to be getting home 8y
ScorpioBookDreams If you need anything, let me know xx 8y
LeahBergen Oh, poor you! If you don't laugh at these things you'll cry, right?? You'd best give your brother-in-law a little warning! 😂 I have your parcel ready to ship - our post offices were closed today for a national holiday. I MAY have thrown a couple more little things in to help cheer you up. 😘 8y

Day27 of #augustofpages and my #currentread feels like a Schrodinger's read! I was very excited about The Age of Reinvention but the opening pages were a bit of a torrent of social history. So I'm both reading it and eyeing up my next read! I'll give it a few more chapters & hopefully the book will survive 🐈 #bookphotochallenge

Notafraidofwords I ended up bailing on it a while back because I felt a bit confused by it and had a hard time getting into the book. However, everyone just talks about how wonderful it is. 8y
Donna_sBookMinute Your review got my interest. The beginning of the synopsis caused me to shy away from this one. I'm glad I read it through. I'm in. 8y
Donna_sBookMinute Oh and your photo, though more serene, reminds me of a section of my old walking trail. It was a good place to stretch. Nice pic.. 8y
Onioons @Notafraidofwords I know what you mean. I'm finding it very up & down, but I'm about half way and going to stick with it 🤓 8y
Onioons @Donna_sBookMinute It's such a treat to read outdoors, isn't it! 8y
