A masterful speculative novel exploring the fine lines between faith, conspiracy, and mania in contemporary America.

Pickpick

Book #41
4/5
Unique concept, well written. Parts of it may have gone a bit...unhinged...but that fits the theme nicely. A few people start hearing a hum that most of the population can't hear. They find one another and form a group to try to determine the origin of the hum.

Kris10H Things become increasingly out of hand, as those who can't hear the hum start to suspect the group of cult-like behaviours.
Definitely a good read for anyone looking for something different than all the common story tropes.

The gay authors were all in fancy dress at the Giller ceremony tonight. Jordan Tannahill was wearing high heeled pumps with this… um… Greek tabard?

Lindy @TrishB do you know if Tannahill wearing some kind of sport emblem on his tabard? 3y
TrishB It‘s not one I know! It does look like a Greek/Roman symbol though- more original Olympics than modern day. I got lost down the Tannahill rabbit hole 😁 (edited) 3y
Lindy @TrishB I forgot to mention the large capital B on the back of the garment. (?) Thanks for weighing in. 🤗 3y

Pickpick

A woman starts hearing a low hum. It gives her nosebleeds, migraines & insomnia. Nobody else can hear it. Then she finds one of her 17-year-old students hears it too. Their bond over this shared experience is easily misconstrued. Then they find others. A weird, provoking, suspenseful & seductive novel. Right- & left-wing paranoia. Christian faith & atheism. Desire for community. Society split into two irreconcilable camps. #shadowgiller2021 CanLit

Lindy The novel is in the form of a memoir and the excellent audiobook is read Deborah Pearson. 3y

Paul and I replaced sex with audiobooks. It was a gradual process, over 4 or 5 years. Occasionally we still managed both.

I had my shit together. I didn‘t need God. That‘s pretty much how I felt since I was 16, when it suddenly struck me that God was no different than every other guy in my high school. He wasn‘t interested in me unless I was down on my knees.

Reggie In my 20‘s, some guy kinda said the same thing to me about how Jesus was a crazy manipulative boyfriend. Be good cause I‘m doing this for you. The Catholic inside me I thought was dead kind of turned over in his grave as I listened. 3y
Lindy @Reggie Religious faith is complicated, isn‘t it. I hope I didn‘t seriously offend any Littens by posting this quote. 3y
Reggie I don‘t think so, Lindy. And by now we have a good grasp of who you are through your posts. 😊 3y

GondorGirl I mean, I'm not sure what he's running for, but I'd vote for him! 😹 3y
Lindy @GondorGirl We‘ve got two separate elections happening at the moment—federal in September and municipal in October—and I would like to vote for Renzo in either of them. 😏 3y
LeahBergen He‘s got my vote, for sure. 3y
