Paulina & Fran
Paulina & Fran: A Novel | Rachel B. Glaser
11 posts | 17 read | 34 to read
At an elite New England art school, two young women collide. Paulina is a sexually adventurous wannabe queen bee with a devastating mean- girl streak. Fran is a gifted yet reluctant painter with gorgeous curly hair and uncertain dreams. On a trip to Norway the two are drawn together, but as adult life encroaches, jealousy and unexpected love tear them apart. Rachel B. Glaser's Paulina & Fran is both a sparkling dance party of a novel and a wicked, wistful snapshot of that moment when the carefree cocoon of adolescence opens into the permanent, unknowable future.

Why do I force myself to finish a book I wasn‘t enjoying? I am torn. I feel once I start, I am committed to a book and I want to finish it. On the other hand, I have never disliked a book and then in the end thought to myself “I am so glad I pushed through that, it was so worth it!” Any thoughts?

I was led to this by Ms. Glaser appearing on Granta's list of young American novelists. By sheer coincidence the book is published by Granta. There's definitely a voice in there and a tale told with wit and vigor, but it feels a little like a first novel or a doctoral submission. It's mannered and a tad overwritten, but more than occasionally charming and, sometimes, even a little surprising.

I enjoyed this novel about the volatile relationship between two girls at art college. Paulina is audacious, biting, and dramatic. Fran is quiet, artistic, and alluring. Both girls are self-absorbed and in search of life. I liked how the novel captures the intensity of college relationships. How in a brief span a person can become a friend, lover, enemy, and then be gone.#ikissedagirl #junetunz @Cinfhen

MicheleinPhilly I just read this recently. I think I wasn't in the right mood for it because I found them both to be insufferable twits. Or maybe I'm just getting less patient with college shenanigans in my old age. 😜 8y
Bibliogeekery Haven't heard of this one! Thx! #queerbooks 8y

Cinfhen 😂 @MicheleinPhilly I could see how this story could go either way, depending on your mood! 8y
Cinfhen I agree @ReadOrDieRachel awesome cover 8y
merelybookish @MicheleinPhilly I can totally see that. I went to a pretty weird college for undergrad so it was kind of fun to revisit that through this, I think 8y
merelybookish @ReadOrDieRachel Yes, I think that may be partly why I wanted to read it. 8y
merelybookish @Bibliogeekery I would be interested on your take. It feels generous to call it a #queerbook. Their experimentation feels much more in the vein of Katy Perry's song. 8y
Bibliogeekery @merelybookish oh interesting. I'm going to check it out. Will let you know! 8y

A quick read, with nice prose and an entertaining plot. The jokes had me laughing out loud, though the dialogue was too consistently witty for my taste. The characters work well though; complicated and layered, they kept me guessing.

#funfridayphoto This was one of my favorite reads last year! Set at an arts college this was the kind of book I laughed at while thinking I should not be laughing--I so ?the "unlikeable female character." Wonderfully captures the complications of friendships at the best of times and so many sentences I wanted to highlight. The kind of book that feels like it has jagged edges ?

BookBerries Sounds so good!! 8y

Mean Girls meets art school. We follow two frenemies through art school and beyond. Unlikable characters with an unfulfilling ending. 😍😍😍 Loved the fresh writing and unique perspective.

Free Arcs from my local indie. I'll have a few!

Matilda One of my 2015 favorites- I did that thing where you laugh at things you're not supposed to a lot. Also so many gorgeous sentences. 9y
