Out of This World
Out of This World: Speculative Fiction in Translation from the Cold War to the New Millennium | Rachel S. Cordasco
4 posts | 1 read
The twenty-first century has witnessed an explosion of speculative fiction in translation (SFT). Rachel Cordasco examines speculative fiction published in English translation since 1960, ranging from Soviet-era fiction to the Arabic-language dystopias that emerged following the Iraq War. Individual chapters on SFT from Korean, Czech, Finnish, and eleven other source languages feature an introduction by an expert in the language's speculative fiction tradition and its present-day output. Cordasco then breaks down each chapter by subgenre--including science fiction, fantasy, and horror--to guide readers toward the kinds of works that most interest them. Her discussion of available SFT stands alongside an analysis of how various subgenres emerged and developed in a given language. She also examines the reasons a given subgenre has been translated into English. An informative and one-of-a-kind guide, Out of This World offers readers and scholars alike a tour of speculative fiction's new globalized era.

I reviewed an #ARC of this book a couple of months ago. Now it's here and it's really beautiful! Indispensable guide for anyone interested in speculative literature in translation!

Before October is over, here is my round-up for September #BookReport.
I wasn't expecting to like The Slynx given that it's Russian future, post-nuclear dystopian science fiction (or possibly a dark fable). But it had some really good things to say and it was dark but with with and humor.
Plus it's a book out of Out of this World, which is a guide to speculative fiction in translation. This book is going to do serious damage to my #TBR.

Thank you to the author for an advance copy of this book. Out of This World is going to be a must-have title for anyone interested in speculative fiction and/or world literature. The book is organized by language (as it should be for discussion about writers) and covers the countries where that language is spoken. The author covers many languages that you don‘t often hear about or connect to speculative fiction such as Hebrew, Czech, and Arabic.

DrexEdit Each chapter has an introduction by a translator currently working in that language that gives a brief history of speculative fiction in that language through the 20th and 21st centuries. This is followed by an essay that highlights the authors who have written or are writing in that language and the books that they have contributed. Add in copious notes and resource lists and you‘ve got a guidebook to a vast universe of speculative fiction. ⬇ 3y
DrexEdit I picture Out of This World on my bookshelf one day and it already has notes scribbled in the margins, highlighted passages, and bursts with post-it notes. 💜

One book mentioned therein is the #NYRBBookClub reading selection for September. I really hope to be able to join in this month's discussion!

The early twenty-first century has witnessed an explosion of speculative fiction in English translation (SFT). Whether these texts come to us as novels, collections, anthologies, or stand-alone stories published in online and print magazines, they both demonstrate and contribute to the ongoing process of globalization.
