The Couple at the Table
The Couple at the Table: The new, must-read gripping thriller | Sophie Hannah
5 posts | 6 read | 2 to read
You're on your honeymoon at an exclusive couples-only resort. You receive a note, warning you to 'Beware of the couple at the table nearest to yours'. At dinner that night, five other couples are sitting close by, but none of their tables is any nearer or further away than any of the others. It's almost as if someone has set the scene in order to make the warning note meaningless. Why would anyone do that? You have no idea. You also don't know that you're about to be murdered, or that once you're dead, all the evidence will suggest that no one there that night could possibly have committed the crime. So who might be trying to warn you? And who might be about to kill you, and seems certain to get away with it?

I have to agree with the previous reviewers and say that this book was a bit of a let down. The beginning started out strong and I bought into the premise- who could have killed this woman when all the suspects are eliminated? The setting of a beautiful resort where the guests don‘t know each other was intriguing. But it dragged on and the reveal was sort of weird. The set up promised more than the ending delivered, I guess.

It started off well & I was hooked by about 3 chapters in. About halfway, the pace dropped & it seemed to take forever to get to what actually happened. I stuck with it as I was invested in knowing how the murder was committed by then.I rate it a solid 3⭐ as I liked the general idea, even if the execution wasn't quite right.

My thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Hodder & Stoughton, for the opportunity to read an ARC. #NetGalley

Whilst I quite enjoyed this story, at the same time I thought it was a little long winded and somewhat contrived. In fact, it became quite bizarre. There are nods to Agatha Christie and I enjoyed this aspect of it. It just took a long time to get to the grand finale and the plot kept going off at tangents! I don‘t think this is one of Sophie Hannah‘s better books, but it‘s entertaining nevertheless. #Pigeonhole
