The New York Times bestselling author of My Sunshine Away returns with another instant Southern classic: a gripping and heartfelt novel about a mysterious machine that upends a small Louisiana town, asking us all to wonder if who we truly are is who we truly could be. What would you do if you knew your life's potential? That's the question facing the residents of Deerfield, Louisiana, when the DNAMIX machine appears in their local grocery store. It's nothing to look at, really--it resembles a plain photo booth. But its promise is amazing: With just a quick swab of your cheek and two dollars, the device claims to use the science of DNA to tell you your life's potential. With enough credibility to make the townspeople curious, soon the former teachers, nurses, and shopkeepers of Deerfield are abruptly changing course to pursue their destinies as magicians, cowboys, and athletes--including the novel's main characters, Douglas Hubbard and his wife, Cherilyn, who both believed they were perfectly happy until they realized they could dream for more... Written with linguistic grace and a sense of wonder, The Big Door Prize sparkles with keen observations about what it might mean to stay true to oneself while honoring the bonds of marriage, friendship, and community, and how the glimmer of possibility can pull these bonds apart, bring them back together, and make second chances possible, even under the strangest of circumstances.

Mehso-so

#BookNumber1 Sigh. I don‘t really know what to do with this book. I was a fan at the beginning, then my excitement sort of faded, and then I was almost moved to tears at the end. What I will say is that the author, M.O. Walsh, had a good message. How can you know that your life is changing, while it is happening rather than in hindsight? I don‘t know, & this book did not necessarily help me answer that question. Read on in comments...

heeadie I cared for the characters, but I did not fall in love with them, or feel as though I am losing a friend when the book finished (as I normally do). I wish there was more connection with the characters, honestly. Another complaint I have is that all of the action in the book is sort of just… skipped. 3y
heeadie The author is talented when it comes to telling the reader what is happening without directly telling you, but sometimes a book needs to acknowledge some of the action while it is happening, not only after the fact. Finally, some loose ends were never really tied up. Who the heck is Tessa and Ricky? Please let me know if you read the book, because I haven‘t figured it out. Happy(ish) ending but would have liked to have fallen in love with it more. 3y

This will be my view for most of today! 📚🤓 Winston is refusing to take off his Christmas jammies (literally, he'll throw a fit if I try), so we're all cozied up for the day.

Merry Christmas, everyone! 🎄

TheRiehlDeal What a cool Corgi. Usually pets hate wearing stuff and want out ASAP. Glad he refuses to let you take them off. 3y

Love the premise of the book, a machine pops up telling you what you‘d be at your highest potential and how that affected this small town. What I got was a couple having marriage issues not being able to communicate as they used to because of their readouts. This included a side plot of a teen girl and boy having trouble with whatever it was. Kinda surprised I finished this. wanted so badly to take something away from, but all I get is confused

I‘m having a lot of trouble getting through this book. The story follows three different type of people (a husband a wife and a teenage boy) perspectives as they navigate a new store machine that tells them who they would be if they were at their best potential. Yet the story is fixated on this teenage girl who wants revenge for an unknown reason. It‘s just not making sense where the story is heading. About the DNA machine? About the girl?

Pickpick

This was one of the most thought provoking fiction books I have read in a long time. This will make a great book for book club discussions.

MyNamesParadise I absolutely loved his book My Sunshine Away, but this book seemed really different when I read the description. Is it good? 5y
Kappadeemom I will say it‘s different. Seems that folks either love it or do t like it at all. I fall somewhere in the middle. @MyNamesParadise 5y
