Tacky
Tacky: Love Letters to the Worst Culture We Have to Offer | Rax King
5 posts | 5 read | 4 to read
"TACKY is about the power of pop culture -- like any art, low or high -- to imprint itself on our lives and shape our experiences, no matter one's commitment to "good" taste. These fifteen essays are a nostalgia-soaked antidote to the millennial generation's obsession with irony, putting the aesthetics we've learned to hate to love -- frosted tips and glosses, Sex and the City, The Cheesecake Factory -- into kinder and sharper perspective. Each essay revolves around a different maligned (and yet, Rax would argue, vital) cultural artifact and its entwinement with Rax's millennial coming-of-age: an essay about the gym-tan-laundry exuberance of Jersey Shore morphs into an excavation of grief over the death of her father, who loved the show; in another, Guy Fieri helps her heal from an abusive relationship. The result is a collection that captures a personal and generational experience with clarity, humor, and heartfelt honesty"--

Not sure what to think of this one. It appears to be a social commentary on things many find tacky (Jersey Shore, Hot Topic, Cheesecake Factory), but instead it‘s a memoir incorporating those things into King‘s story. And the writing is good, but some of her life choices are a bit abhorrent to me. I‘ll give it a low pick since I enjoyed reading much of it.

Christine I JUST finished this one on audio an hour ago!! (Were you also inspired by Traci from The Stacks?) My review will be about the same as yours!! 6d
Hooked_on_books @Christine I was totally reading along with Traci! I‘m a proud member of the Stacks Pack. I love her podcast and focus on nonfiction, which I‘ve struggled to otherwise find in pods. She asks such good questions to authors. 6d
Christine Yes, love her podcast/nonfiction focus! I've never taken part in the book club but am really curious what participants thought of this one! 5d
DimeryRene Love these comments about Traci and her podcast!!! Been listening to her for a long time. 🥰🥰 4d

I guess I'm still more at ease with the idea that I can be consumed than I am with the idea that I should be understood.

This is basically a memoir. She talks about Creed and Jersey Shore, basically guilty pleasures, but frames them around her own story. I ended up really liking it but it started off as a hard sell.
