I couldn't fold the laundry since #Zeus was 'using' it, so had to finish my book instead. Expected this to be a lighthearted nostalgia trip through my old 'hood, and it was, but also so much more. A funny, touching coming of age story, it also offers a very personal pov on a fascinating and turbulent time in Québécois and Canadian history. #petsoflitsy #littens

mllemay I really appreciate seeing your review of this! Will check it out. 8y
KVanRead @mllemay I hope you like it! 8y

Really enjoyed today's chapter (trying to get in one ch of my French book a day) on the reaction of a family who had up to then supported the ideas of the FLQ (Front Libération Quebec) to the murder of Pierre Laporte. The shock and guilt they feel really personalizes a dark moment in Canadian history.

Love it when a book gets me Googling to find out more like this one just did with the Abortion Caravan of 1970 that travelled across Canada from Vancouver and stormed Parliament Hill demanding free and legal abortion, provoking the first adjournment of Parliament in its 103-year history, shutting down the House of Commons for over an hour. It took until 1988 to get there, but this was the beginning.

BookishFeminist This looks so good. Wonder if I can find it in the states 8y
KVanRead @BookishFeminist It's not on Amazon, but maybe from a French bookseller. The publisher is Boréale. 8y
BookishFeminist @KVanRead thanks! I'll keep an eye out for it! Maybe it'll crop up somewhere random. 8y

Spotted a few of these in NDG last week... Old newspaper boxes converted into a little free library type of deal. The name Livre Service is a pun on Libre Service (self serve.) Makes my old hood VERY DAMN GOOD, IMOðŸ˜ðŸ“šðŸ‘ #vacaybookpics

Twocougs That is so fantastic! 8y
mllemay That's such a great idea! I hope this gets expanded to other cities as well. 8y
OSChamberlain I really wish they'd do this in Miami! 8y

Okay coincidence level is getting spooky! Character just moved from my old neighborhood in Ottawa to my old neighborhood in Montreal, same as I did many many years later! #mylifeasabook

BookishFeminist Creepy but cool! 8y
mllemay Aaah!! That's so cool! I love coincidences like that! 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa That's creepy...sounds like the beginning of some horror movie. 8y

KVanRead @Riveted_Reader_Melissa 😱...or a creepy short story or novel...think I'm going to add it to the writing prompt file 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @KVanRead Yep, sounds like someone sits down and starts seeing themselves as they flip the pages, but instead of a cool Neverending Story (the movie) pull in, it's a horror stalking pull into the story instead! 8y

No time for French book shopping in MTL until I got to the airport but Trudeau Intl did not let me down...I snagged this novel set in the 70's in NDG, just two streets over from our Airbnb and one street over from my old house! So far I love it - breezy, nostalgic, trippy and fun.

mllemay Cool! She writes for the paper I read every day, and I've never really liked her columns but I've never tried her fiction. I'll be curious to hear what you think of it when you're done! 8y
KVanRead @mllemay I was mostly drawn to the setting and must admit I've never read her columns although I've heard a lot of people are put off by her. So far this is really sweet and funny and really gets inside the teenage girl mind. And the writing is quick and entertaining without the French being too challenging for me, lol! 8y
mllemay @KVanRead that's good to hear - I'll probably give it a try then! 8y
