Police at the Funeral
Police at the Funeral | Margery Allingham
7 posts | 5 read | 5 to read
A VINTAGE MURDER MYSTERY Agatha Christie called her a shining light. Have you discovered Margery Allingham, the 'true queen' of the classic murder mystery? The tranquility of Cambridge is punctured when Cousin Andrew of the illustrious Faraday family disappears without a trace. No time is wasted in summoning Albert Campion and his sleuthing skills away from the bustle of Piccadilly to investigate but little does he expect to be greeted by a band of eccentric relatives all at daggers with each other. Soon there are as many dead bodies as there are red herrings, and Campion must uncover the secrets of the Faraday dynasty before another victim falls... As urbane as Lord Wimsey...as ingenious as Poirot... Meet one of crime fictions Great Detectives, Mr Albert Campion.

Booksnchill Love Albert! 6y
Moray_Reads @Booksnchill I always love an eccentric gentleman detective, sorry "deputy adventurer", and I don't know why it took me so long to get to Margery Allingham 6y
Booksnchill Have you seen the BBC series? Years old but I loved it! 6y
Moray_Reads @Booksnchill no, I never have. I must try to get hold of it 6y

Stopped by my favourite used bookstore last night on the way to a show and picked up a few things. Technically I bought only five books because the Lillian Beckwith is for my mum.

Campion and Lugg remind me a little bit of the Eleventh Doctor and Strax 😜 I blame the round glasses, the baldness and the overall Doctor Who free association that comes with having Peter Davison in this role.

I needed a light read after Sapiens and this cosy crime fitted the bill. Delightful writing, eccentric English characters (including Campion, a Sherlock Holmes -esque amateur detective) and Cambridge setting. The investigation takes its time = from another era! But assured writing and sense of humour make it an enjoyable read. 🕵

Slightly belated I know, but here's what I read in August. And I recommend Albert Campion (Margery Allingham's detective) to anyone who likes Peter Wimsey and other gentleman detectives in the 1920s and 30s.

Albert Campion is such an interesting character - much less whole heartedly on the side of justice than say Peter Wimsey - and this is a good example of that - he's investigating what happened, but you're not 100% sure he's going to hand over the culprit to the police depending on who the murderer is!
