Annie McIntyre has a love/hate relationship with Garnett, Texas. After Annie is lured into the family business - a private investigation firm - by her supposed-to-be-retired grandfather, Leroy, a waitress goes missing. Annie and Leroy begin an investigation that leads them down rural routes and haunted byways, to noxious-smelling oil fields and to the glowing neon of local honky-tonks. As Annie works to uncover the truth she finds herself identifying with the victim in increasing, unsettling ways. Print run 40,000.

I rate my book at 4⭐️

Not bad, it did a good job developing the main character instead of just throwing you into the fire with them. Small town Texas and the secrets within the town. I didn‘t even bother trying to figure out who the culprit was. This is book #1 in a new series.

At 1st I didn‘t understand the lower rating on Goodreads for this one but over time I got it. I liked the book, but it dragged at parts. It‘s definitely more of a literary mystery than a thriller. It‘s about a young woman who comes back to her hometown after college & gets involved in her family‘s private investigating business when one of her colleagues at the cafe she works at is murdered. I‘ll still read the 2nd book when it comes out in April.

Annie returns to her Texas hometown after college. At loose ends, she works at the town cafe. When a co-worker is murdered, she joins her PI grandad to solve the crime. Her cousin Nikki, who always has her back, investigates honky tonk bars & other questionable places/people with her.The descriptions of the wide open landscape & the natural world are vivid, beautiful,& gritty, evoking a sense of loneness but also a feeling of connection to the land.

Pay Dirt Road is a mystery novel about a young woman who returns to her hometown after college only to find herself wrapped up in a local murder investigation. I highly recommend this slow burn and thoughtful mystery. I hope to see future novels from Samantha Jayne Allen!

Annie returns home after college, waits tables and works p/t at her grandfather‘s private investigation firm. When a co-worker at the cafe is murdered, Annie helps to find the killer. Well-written book that gives the reader a good feel for this small town In Texas and the people who live there. Good book.

Annie McIntyre is a recent college graduate who has moved back home to the small town of Garnett, TX and is waitressing until she figures out her next move. Her “retired” grandfather, a PI, urges her into the business when a waitress friend ends up strangled to death on her family‘s land. Between the dangers of investigating a murder, coming to grips with a hazy and disturbing memory from college and figuring out her future, ⬇️

robinb she has her hands full. No word if this might be the start of a series from this debut author, but it certainly reads like one. While the writing was fine, I felt parts of the narrative were jumpy and jerky, and at times I found myself feeling like I had missed out on some background material (especially in the beginning). There were also some questions that I felt weren‘t answered sufficiently by the end, ⬇️ 2y
robinb and I felt a disconnect with the characters. So all-in-all just an “OK” for me. 3.25/5⭐️ (edited) 2y
