New Handbook for a Post-Roe America
New Handbook for a Post-Roe America: The Complete Guide to Abortion Legality, Access, and Practical Support | Robin Marty
19 posts | 3 read | 6 to read
A completely new edition--with a new introduction by Amanda Palmer--of Robin Marty's best-selling manual on what to do if/when Roe v. Wade is overturned. The New Handbook for a Post-Roe America is a comprehensive and user-friendly manual for understanding and preparing for the looming changes to reproductive rights law, and getting the health care you need. Activist and writer Robin Marty guides readers through various worst-case scenarios of a post-Roe America, and offers ways to fight back, including: how to acquire financial support, how to use existing networks and create new ones, and how to, when required, work outside existing legal systems. She details how to plan for your own emergencies, how to start organizing now, what to know about self-managed abortion care with pills and/or herbs, and how to avoid surveillance. The only guidebook of its kind, The New Handbook for a Post-Roe America includes new chapters that cover the needs and tools available for pregnant people across the country. This second edition features extensively updated information on abortion legality and access in the United States, and approximately one hundred pages of new content, covering such topics as independent alternatives to Planned Parenthood, "auntie networks," taxpayer-funded abortions, and using social media wisely in the age of surveillance.

Mehso-so

I wanted so much more. Maybe that‘s not fair, maybe I‘m expecting something that couldn‘t really be written before Roe actually fell, but there‘s a lot of speculation in here that is irrelevant now. Many sections are just print-outs of websites (based on the assumption of them becoming inaccessible at some point post-Roe). The Resources section, conversely, is only online. 🤷🏻‍♀️ This could be a good start, but I sure hope there‘s more out there.

ravenlee Fourth finish for #AwesomeAugust and still no bingo. 2y
KristiAhlers We probably need to process and the reality of this first. Then do a really deep dive on what is next before a comprehensive book can come out that means something. I know I personally haven‘t worked past the rage and anger and yes, even the betrayal yet. (edited) 2y
ravenlee @KristiAhlers you‘re right - we need to go through the grieving process and then address the new reality. This particular book focuses really hard on what the 2020 COVID situation did to abortion access, which was important but is also not current. I‘m still furious, especially as I see the local clinic packing up here in NW Louisiana. I don‘t know what to do with all my rage and sadness and frustration, and I hoped there‘d be something here. 2y

Yeah…that word is “flouting.”

While a lot of this book is useful and important, there are also lots of this, and references to sections that aren‘t in the book at all. I feel like this update didn‘t get edited at all.

TrishB How annoying. 2y
Megabooks Personally I like to get the law written on a cape and flaunt it in a runway show before I go about flouting it! 🤣 2y
ravenlee @Megabooks ah, I get it - you have to flaunt it first, so people can understand what exactly you‘re then flouting! 2y

Taxpayers will always be forced to fund programs they disagree with. Taxes fund wars, jails, bailouts for the rich, stadiums and sports arenas and all sorts of programs many oppose. Yet somehow a moral objection by a minority of Americans to the legal act of terminating a pregnancy has become an issue so sacrosanct that abortions has [sic] been removed line by line from the entire US tax code. That‘s not a reasonable moral objection, that‘s 👇🏻

ravenlee weaponizing a political view. 2y
marleed I had to take a snapshot of your post - so much to ponder in that quote. 2y

Have you all seen this? I haven‘t read it yet, but it may be a good idea to get a copy of it now while you still can.

julesG Might this become a case of: Get it before it's banned? 2y
slategreyskies @julesG that‘s what I‘m thinking. 2y
ravenlee That‘s why I bought mine as soon as the leak occurred. Just started reading it today. 2y

I have two books I just started and an ongoing read…yet I think this one just jumped the line. I‘m glad I bought this when the leaked opinion came out, because I wonder how long it will even be legal to get this book. 🤬

Eggbeater I am devastated. Happened to be in the middle of reading the tagged book when the news broke today. 2y
dylanisreading Requested this from the library today. 2y
slategreyskies Just requested this from my library. We have a large library system with a lot of different libraries, but there‘s only one copy of this book for all of them. WTF? 2y
