The Second War of the Worlds | 
pick(1976) Second in Smith's "Annwn" series set on a steampunk parallel Earth. In this one, H.G. Wells's Martians have regrouped and plan a second invasion -- this time against Annwn for reasons that aren't entirely clear. In fact, little makes sense about this seat-of-the-pants plot, which pits heroes from book one plus Sherlock Holmes & Watson against nihilistic theosophists and Martians. It's bonkers as it sounds, but also fun.
