My unique fact: I am a bookbinder. A very amateur one 😄📚 Here's some class notes I bound using Japanese binding, archival media board, and fabric. (As for the book I'm reviewing, it's a great book for novices, heavily weighted toward artistic expression through paper. If you want to repair your old books or make new hardcovers, I can recommend more comprehensive sources in print and online.) #augustphotochallenge #uniquefacts #bookbinding
LeahBergen I recently took a short beginner class in bookbinding and definitely want to do more! 8y
TheSpinecrackersBookClub I didn't even know about this. It's so awesome! 8y

readinginthedark I'll definitely have to read this! And if you have suggestions for repairing old hardcovers, I'd love to hear it! I have some really old books that are starting to fall apart. 8y
CherylDeFranceschi So awesome! What an amazing talent! 8y
becausetrains @readinginthedark lemme look for some info - are you looking to repair corners, paste pages back in, fix covers, repair bindings...? Any/all of the above? 8y
becausetrains @LeahBergen it's fun, isn't it? ☺️📚 I make notebooks on occasion too. Been thinking about an Etsy store, but don't have the time right now 👎 8y
becausetrains @TheSpinecrackersBookClub @Merethebookgal @Leelee08 @Chessa @Eyelit @CherylDeFranceschi thanks! I'll post more, one of these days 😎 8y
readinginthedark @becausetrains Primarily repairing bindings, but the other stuff is good, too. Thanks! 8y
TheNextBook @becausetrains I am in the beginning stages of a product that I would love to bind in hardcover. It will over 300 pages though. What can you recommend? 8y
becausetrains Agh, @readinginthedark, I never responded to your post! First, find/make a press. I use two heavy boards covered in Formica and clamped together; you want to be able to exert a lot of pressure on the book without leaving marks (even from woodgrain.) When glueing, use lots of wax paper to keep pages separate. Pros use methylcellulose, PVA, and wheat paste; I've used thinned Aleene's glue with ok results. Ask me on Instagram? (becausetrains) 8y
becausetrains @TheNextBook Cool, what are you making? Depending on the paper, something that large would need a pretty sturdy binding, like binding on linen tapes (I cheat and use cotton or synthetic ribbon!) Amazon has relatively cheap binder's board, which I should invest in 😁 instead of using art store media board for covers. Get a good bone folder too, one that won't easily get scratched or dented (or break) and find sharp disposable knives. Instagram me! 8y
readinginthedark @becausetrains Thanks! I'm not on Instagram, but this will get me started, so I appreciate it. I'll probably get the supplies and then bust out my husbands tools and stuff for that pressure exerting. 😄 8y
becausetrains @readinginthedark haha okay! Feel free to email me (a.w.stephens@gmail.com) if you have more questions, but I'm not much more than a rank amateur 🤓 8y
