1944, Rome. Newlywed Niki Novotn is recruited by a new American spy agency to establish a secret branch in Italy's capital. One of the OSS's few female operatives abroad and multilingual, she's tasked with crafting fake stories and distributing propaganda to lower the morale of enemy soldiers. Despite limited resources, Niki and a scrappy team of artists, forgers and others--now nicknamed The Lipstick Bureau--find success, forming a bond amid the cobblestoned streets and storied villas of the newly liberated city. But her work is also a way to escape devastating truths about the family she left behind in Czechoslovakia and a future with her controlling American husband. As the war drags on and the pressure intensifies, Niki begins to question the rules she's been instructed to follow, and her heart leads her in an unexpected direction. But one step out of line, one mistake, could mean life or death... This was disappointing. I was excited and expected more. I will say, though, I‘m glad I finished it.

Wow. Michelle Gable again takes you on an historic ride. Niki is part of OSS in the MO department during WWII. We follow her through her adventures and misadventures, love and heartbreak. The story is told through Niki‘s eye (both past and present) and the eyes of her friend, an Italian prostitute. A very satisfying ending.

This is a lighter WWII novel about a branch of the OSS...“Morale Operations“. It is loosely based on the life of Barbara Lauwers and includes some humour and romance. While the story itself is okay but not amazing, my real enjoyment came from learning about the existence of the group and the creative and effective work they undertook and that makes it a worthy read. Also I loved the characters of Moggy and Ezra. 3.5/5 stars.
