Maigret Travels
Maigret Travels | Georges Simenon
3 posts | 1 read
One of the greatest writers of the twentieth century . . . Simenon was unequaled at making us look inside, though the ability was masked by his brilliance at absorbing us obsessively in his stories. The Guardian When two people turn up dead at the same hotel mere hours apart, Maigret suspects it is no coincidence When multi-millionaire David Ward is found dead in the same hotel as a countess who attempted suicide only hours earlier, Maigret presumes that the two cases are connected. When the countess flees Paris after the murder, Maigret follows her to Nice and then to Switzerland to uncover the truth. Maigret Travels is a tense, intricately woven mystery with a shocking conclusion.

There's a cameo appearance amongst the billionaire playboys, femmes fatale and Hollywood jetsetters of an unnamed "famous American film comedian". My first thought was Charlie Chaplin, but as the book's set in 1957 I think that's a bit past his prime, also he's British, so then I thought either Groucho Marks or Bob Hope and, on the basis of no evidence, decided Hope fits the bill.

TrishB Wow 😯 a drinking game with your book! 2y
Bookwomble @TrishB I like trying out literary cocktails when I come across them ? It started off with Raymond Chandler and the Gimlet in "The Long Goodbye", though I don't look as cool drinking it as Eliott Gould did in the film version! 2y

vivastory I have been wanting to try Simenon for awhile. Do you have recommendations? I am planning on trying a literary inspired cocktail later this week. I'm going to look through the tagged book for inspiration 2y
Bookwomble @vivastory As far as I can tell, the 75 Maigret novels, while they do gradually advance the character in age, don't seem to really depend upon each other. Having watched various TV adaptations, when I picked up my first book, I already had some background and slipped easily into Maigret's world. I've enjoyed all the ones I've read, so if say just dive in! 2y
Bookwomble @vivastory I have Tequila Mockingbird, too. Good recipes, though I think they're mainly inspired by rather than drawn from the works covered. Not that there's anything wing with that 😁🍸 2y
vivastory @Bookwomble Thanks for your feedback! I am planning on book shopping for my bday later this week & am mentally compiling a list. I know that Penguin has been steadily pub. new Simenon translations over the past few years. As I have a few days off next weekend I'm planning on also relaxing with a drink or two. If I do fix something fancy, I'll let you know how it turns out! 2y
Bookwomble @vivastory Sounds like a good birthday plan 😊 2y
tpixie @vivastory happy birthday 🎁 📚 🍹 2y
tpixie That‘s a pretty bottle of gin & drink 🍹 (edited) 2y
Bookwomble @tpixie It's not my photo, but that is the brand of gin, and the same bottle, I've got chilled in my freezer 😊 2y
tpixie @Bookwomble lol i‘m glad you could tell what I wrote! I just saw all my horrible typos and AutoCorrect‘s! I like gin, I‘ll have to try that kind! 2y
Bookwomble @tpixie I'd had some more gin, so your spelling looked fine to me 🤪 2y
tpixie @Bookwomble lol 😂 hilarious 😂 2y

Pickpick

That was fantastic! I think my favourite Maigret so far! Following Maigret as he faces and processes his own class assumptions and social insecurities is fascinating. Simenon's portrayal of what we'd now call The 1% is both devastating and humane. 👇

Bookwomble Maigret goes through some character development here, though as I'm reading them out of order due to what my library has available, I'm unsure whether that progresses through the series or if, like many serials, the next installment resets to the initially established character. Still, 5 ⭐ 2y

Having struggled with a couple of books recently, I'm going with something I know I will enjoy.
Maigret's in a sour mood here, as he's investigating a murder involving the rich and powerful, a "social set" amongst which he feels uncomfortable, gets annoyed with himself for being so, then projects that annoyance onto those around him. I like it when Simenon draws these personality traits rather than having Maigret a mere 'investigation engine'.

Bookwomble The guitar jazz of Django Reinhardt and the Quintet of the Hot Club of France, with Stephane Grapelli on violin, feels just the right musical accompaniment 😊

TrishB My Dad was a big Grapelli fan, that takes me back. 2y
Palimpsest Right away Minor Swing popped into my head! So good! 😄 2y
Bookwomble @TrishB I'm glad that brought up a happy memory 😊 2y
