Bookwomble
Maigret Travels | Georges Simenon
post image

There's a cameo appearance amongst the billionaire playboys, femmes fatale and Hollywood jetsetters of an unnamed "famous American film comedian". My first thought was Charlie Chaplin, but as the book's set in 1957 I think that's a bit past his prime, also he's British, so then I thought either Groucho Marks or Bob Hope and, on the basis of no evidence, decided Hope fits the bill.
Knowing his tipple without asking, the barman serves him a ?

Bookwomble ... cocktail of gin and tomato juice, which I think must be a red snapper. By a happy coincidence, I have the ingredients to make one, so I have! Mine looks nothing like as photogenic as the one in this photo, but it sure tastes good 🍸🍅🍸😋

TrishB Wow 😯 a drinking game with your book! 2y
Bookwomble @TrishB I like trying out literary cocktails when I come across them ? It started off with Raymond Chandler and the Gimlet in "The Long Goodbye", though I don't look as cool drinking it as Eliott Gould did in the film version! 2y

vivastory I have been wanting to try Simenon for awhile. Do you have recommendations? I am planning on trying a literary inspired cocktail later this week. I'm going to look through the tagged book for inspiration 2y
Bookwomble @vivastory As far as I can tell, the 75 Maigret novels, while they do gradually advance the character in age, don't seem to really depend upon each other. Having watched various TV adaptations, when I picked up my first book, I already had some background and slipped easily into Maigret's world. I've enjoyed all the ones I've read, so if say just dive in! 2y
Bookwomble @vivastory I have Tequila Mockingbird, too. Good recipes, though I think they're mainly inspired by rather than drawn from the works covered. Not that there's anything wing with that 😁🍸 2y
vivastory @Bookwomble Thanks for your feedback! I am planning on book shopping for my bday later this week & am mentally compiling a list. I know that Penguin has been steadily pub. new Simenon translations over the past few years. As I have a few days off next weekend I'm planning on also relaxing with a drink or two. If I do fix something fancy, I'll let you know how it turns out! 2y
Bookwomble @vivastory Sounds like a good birthday plan 😊 2y
tpixie @vivastory happy birthday 🎁 📚 🍹 2y
tpixie That‘s a pretty bottle of gin & drink 🍹 (edited) 2y
Bookwomble @tpixie It's not my photo, but that is the brand of gin, and the same bottle, I've got chilled in my freezer 😊 2y
tpixie @Bookwomble lol i‘m glad you could tell what I wrote! I just saw all my horrible typos and AutoCorrect‘s! I like gin, I‘ll have to try that kind! 2y
Bookwomble @tpixie I'd had some more gin, so your spelling looked fine to me 🤪 2y
tpixie @Bookwomble lol 😂 hilarious 😂 2y

Fancying a can of dandelion and burdock on my walk home from the shops, I realised that there are no cocktails featuring this iconic Northern tonic. Naturally, this called for a taste test to determine what base liquor might best match the distinctive flavour of D&B. I'm only ruling out gin on this first round, but don't have the stamina to take my research further in this session.
Universal cocktail snack: Pickled Onion Monster Munch. 🍸🍸🍸🍸🤪

TrishB I‘m so needing some D & B and pickled onion MM now. A snack of champions!! 3y
Bookwomble @TrishB I'll ask our Anthony to get you some from the corner shop when he goes for my Crunchie 😆 3y
