Death of a Traitor
Death of a Traitor | M C Beaton
3 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
Sergeant Hamish Macbeth--Scotland's most quick witted but unambitious policeman--is back to investigate the disappearance of a local woman who is more than she seems, in this new mystery in M.C. Beaton's beloved, New York Times bestselling series. Kate Hibbert is all too eager to lend a hand to her neighbors. Although she has been a resident of the sleepy village of Lochdubh for only a year, in that time Kate has alienated one too many of its residents with her interfering--and not entirely well-intentioned--ways. When Kate's neighbor sees her lugging a heavy suitcase to the bus stop, he hopes that the prying woman is gone for good. But two weeks later, Kate's cousin arrives in town with the news that Kate has gone missing. Hamish Macbeth is called in to investigate the disappearance, and soon he is befuddled by the discovery of Kate's body, her suitcase . . . and the sneaking suspicion that Kate was someone much more sinister than she claimed.

I know there have been complaints about this now being too realistic and less cozy, but I didn‘t find it to be so. Still enjoyed the story and am looking forward to the next one.

Hamish has a suspicious death on his hands in the Scottish Highlands, and along with a temporary partner, must figure out the killer before they strike again. He‘s also recovering from a loss in the prior book, so he‘s a bit more somber. There‘s more action and plot moving in this one rather than personal stories. I loved how quickly the narrative moved, but yet it felt substantial. Great addition to the series!

Moving on to the latest book in the Hamish MacBeth Series, with the second full book written by the new author. Intrigued to see how this responds to incidents in the previous book. Only published in the U.K. last Thursday and in the US on the 14th. #SeriesLove2023 @TheSpineView
