My Aunt Is a Monster
My Aunt Is a Monster: (A Graphic Novel) | Reimena Yee
7 posts | 7 read | 2 to read
Curses! Adventures! And drama! Oh my! Safia might not be able to see the world, but that doesnt mean she cant experience it to the fullest as she finds herself on her very first adventure! This is a contemporary fantasy middle-grade graphic novel about discovering what you are truly capable of. Safia thought that being blind meant she would only get to go on adventures through her audiobooks. This all changes when she goes to live with a distant and mysterious aunt, Lady Whimsy, who takes Safia on the journey of a lifetime! While the reclusive Lady Whimsy stops an old rival from uncovering the truth behind her disappearance, Safia experiences parts of the world she had only dreamed about. But when an unlikely group of chaotic agents comes after Whimsy, Safia is forced to confront the adventure head-on. For the first time in her life, Safia is the hero of her own story, and she must do what she can to save the day. And maybe find some friends along the way. Reimena Yee returns with an all-new graphic novel filled with action, magic, and family. My Aunt Is a Monster explores how anybody can do anything as long as they are given the chance and have the right people behind them.

Simply marvelous. An adventure tale bursting with colour, exhibiting a really expansive variety of ways to fill the pages beyond the traditional grid of panels style, character design seen in the 'monster' unlike anything I've seen before, as well as other imaginative fantasy characters. An almost exclusively female cast of characters with a variety of skills, interests, backgrounds, personalities and foibles. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? Blind representation front and centre without making it a story about Safia's blindness. The fun of exploration and the sweetness of friendship and family: sharing the good and hard times, being vulnerable and honest about your mistakes, and of course the obvious messaging about how we need to rethink the idea of a 'monster'. 1mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/3 The agents of chaos and the Observations magazine investigations leave plenty of room for sequels; I sincerely hope to see more of these characters in this world. P.S. Lord Fauntleroy is a treasure. 💚 1mo

It hurt to bail on this, since it contains the #HauntedShelf #WordSearch word “Chestnut“ 😂 but it really wasn't working. Too whimsical for my taste, and the premise that the main character is blind and so has no idea her aunt is literally a monster just didn't sit well with me.

dabbe #allhailthebail! #betterbooksahead #keepchestnut (if you read long enough to find it, you should get credit for it!) 🤩 2mo
willaful @dabbe I think it was on the first page! 😂 Though I did get about halfway through. 2mo

I‘ve been reading a lot of middle grade graphic novels lately and they do not disappoint! This one started out with a sad event but quickly moved on to adventure and mystery. Something about the thread of the story seemed convoluted at times but not so much that i lost it altogether. Loved the artwork! 4/5⭐️

I almost returned this to the library unread (all my library books went back today) - but then I thought - I‘m not in a hurry, the sun is out - I‘m going to sit on this bench and read it.

And I really liked it - it does have “setting up for a series” vibes and I hope we get to see some further adventures of this little family unit - comprising of a blind orphan, the worlds greatest adventurer & a former agent of chaos.

Bright and colorful graphic novel, but it was confusing plot/wise and with too many characters. It‘s the fantasy aspect that threw me off too.

This was a really cute and exciting graphic novel! I loved how the story unfolded, the diverse cast of characters, and the fun artwork. The way it ended makes me wonder if there will be a sequel exploring Safia and Hebes relationship and lives. It was a pleasant surprise, as I didn‘t realize it was a graphic novel at first.
