Pyre glows with as much power as [One Part Woman] did, and adds immeasurable value to contemporary Indian literatureThe Hindu Saroja and Kumaresan are in love. After a hasty wedding, they arrive in Kumaresans village, harboring a dangerous secret: their marriage is an inter-caste one, likely to upset the village elders should they get to know of it. Kumaresan is naively confident that all will be well. But nothing is further from the truth. Despite the strident denials of the young couple, the villagers strongly suspect that Saroja must belong to a different caste. It is only a matter of time before their suspicions harden into certainty and, outraged, they set about exacting their revenge. A devastating tale of innocent young love pitted against chilling savagery, Pyre conjures a terrifying vision of intolerance.

Mehso-so

A dark novel about two newlyweds who are spurned by the rural villagers because of the caste difference. Very disturbing as a portrayal of the caste system discrimination, narrow-mindedness & violence. The city which welcomes all is a haven by contrast. But I also found the marriage controlling (he ignores her plea to go home). The effect was a horrifying book told in a fairytale style with villains, a complicit groom & a damsel in distress.

Pickpick

This was not shortlisted for the international booker prize but t is a strong read on the prejudices and atrocities of the caste system in rural India. Sad to see how cruel the women can be especially as I always feel if there in unity amongst women, there will be more hope.. it did feel like it was a little one-note and the ending ambiguous but I think the purpose of the book was for it be a real eye-opener to the cruelty of the caste system.

batsy @rockpools The tagged book and Mauvignier and Nettel! Merve Emre who was last year's judge and a few others were raving about the Mauvignier so I'm super curious. I've also seen twitter buzz for the underdog in there, Standing Heavy by GauZ. And I have Bricks and Mortar by Clemens Myer (that I've yet to read 🙈) so I also had this one on my radar. 2y
