Man Booker Prize | Frederic P Miller, Agnes F Vandome, John McBrewster

The #InternationalBooker shortlist will be announced tomorrow. So far I have read 5 books. Favorites are Perfection and Hunchback but I also liked Eurotrash and Calculation of Volume. I am now reading Under the Eye of the Big Bird and liking that one too. Oh and I have Reservoir Bitches, On a Woman‘s Madness and The Book of Disappearance to be read and I want to read Small Boat too. The shortlist is coming too soon! Any thoughts on the longlist?

Ruthiella No thoughts on what might make the short list, but I am super intrigued by The Calculation of Volume. I think I might wait, however, until all 7(?) are translated before I start. 2d
ChaoticMissAdventures I wish these prizes were more spaced out!! The only one I have read is Reservoir (which for the life of me I cannot spell on my own) I am reading Big Bird this week, those were the 2 I was most attracted to, I am also waiting for Hunchback from the library. 2d
BarbaraBB @Ruthiella That is ambitious! I wanted to try to the first to see where it goes and now I will certainly read the next one! 1d

BarbaraBB @ChaoticMissAdventures Me too, it‘s way too much! I am intrigued by many title so I will read some more! 1d
AnneCecilie I haven‘t read that many, but I‘ve loved Reservoir Bitches and The Calculation of Volume, and hope to see them on the shortlist (edited) 1d
Ruthiella The other option is to learn Danish and read them in the original if the translation takes too long. 🤣 Not likely! 1d

#WeeklyForecast 15/25

It‘s #InternationalBooker week for me. Not on the photo 🤦🏻‍♀️ but the one I‘m reading is Under the Eye of the Big Bird. These three I hope to read this week, as many as possible before the announcement of the Shortlist!

Tamra I‘d really like to read Book of Disappearance. Intriguing! 2d
sarahbarnes I‘ve been disappointed with how slow my holds have been coming in from the library for the longlist books! Sounds like a great week! 2d

#InternationalBooker

This was good and frightening. A woman gets caught up in the 18th of November. Every morning she wakes up to the same day. She thinks of ways to escape and get on with her life. It is a quiet book, and somehow it felt believable. I do want to read part II!

sarahbarnes Excited for this one! Glad you liked it! 4d
Chelsea.Poole I just checked this out—surprised at how slim it is. Glad to see your stamp of approval 😊 3d
BarbaraBB @sarahbarnes Your kind of book! 3d

I forgot to post my list, but here are my #ReadYourKindle books. I'm quite eager to read them all, but will I actually do it? Probably not, since my kindle also contains 3 books from this year's #WomensPrize for fiction, 1 from the #InternationalBooker and the #CosmereBuddyRead books 🤷🏻‍♀️ I know it all counts, but damn I really want to read these four as well.

@CBee

CBee I feel your pain! 😂 5d

A decent thriller about a serial killer, his copycat and the cops chasing him. This may sound pretty standard for this kind of book, but it has a lot of suspects and twists and make sure for a few hours well spent!

Now back to the #InternationalBooker!

#WeeklyForecast 14/25

I am about to start Somewhere Else of the #WP25 longlist. After that, I‘ll wait what books will be shortlisted and decide which ones to read. So far I am preferring the #InternationalBooker longlist over the #WP25 so I am having two more of that list lined up for this week!

squirrelbrain Have a great week! 1w
ChaoticMissAdventures I have Big Bird on my TBR for this week also! Hope you like it. 1w
Lesliereadsalot I have Big Bird on my radar too. PS 1/2 way thru Point Zero on your recommendation. Where the heck is Teiko‘s hubby? 1w

This book annoyed my and that might just be a me thing. I never really understood when this book was taking place, if it was a dream or if it happened in an alternative universe. The son and the mum keep spending francs to pay for stuff. The mom went to finishing school in the early 60s and was 80 now, and as far as I know France hasn‘t spend francs in 25 yrs. This annoyed me so much so that the other stuff fell into the background. There‘s a lot

AnneCecilie of mention of Nazisism, denazification after WWII and their ancestors that were Nazis and their wealth. There‘s mention of castles and expensive art and I‘m not sure we ever learn if this was because of the Nazisim. #InternationalBooker (edited) 2w
AnneCecilie @Graywacke As you can see I had some issues with this novel 2w
BarbaraBB That‘s clever, about the francs. I didn‘t notice it when reading the book. 2w

Ruthiella Does it maybe take place in Switzerland, not France? 🤔 2w
AnneCecilie @Ruthiella @BarbaraBB the setting is Switzerland, but the mention of all the franc has probably had me thinking about France. Do they use franc in Switzerland? 2w
Ruthiella @AnneCecilie They do use the Swiss Franc CHF in Switzerland, yes. But it definitely was not a book for you because it bothered you and I think in books we enjoy, it‘s easier to overlook stuff like that. (edited) 2w
Graywacke @AnneCecilie yeah, it definitely didn‘t work for you. 2w
BarbaraBB @Ruthiella @AnneCecilie That‘s It. They still use the Swiss franc instead of Euro so it wasn‘t a mistake! 2w

What a book. 13 linked stories where a main character in one story, can show up as a minor character in another story.

The stories in this collection is told in a one-side conversational way, and I loved that

About abortion, violence against women and femicide, the cartels, and grief

#InternationalBooker

TheBookgeekFrau I'm sold--stacked! 😊 3w
sarahbarnes Just picked this one up - excited to see you liked it! 3w

#WeeklyForecast 12/25

I am reading the tagged book (not that impressed yet) and Fundamentally. The latter is my first #WP25 read since the longlist was announced and I am enjoying it a lot. Next will be A Leopard-Skin Hat from the #InternationalBooker longlist (can you feel the stress with all those longlists?!) and I also haven‘t got to my #Roll100 read, Reward System!

sarahbarnes I‘m excited to hear your thoughts on Leopard Skin Hat! You‘re doing a great job with all the longlists! 😀 3w
BarbaraBB I am more invested in the Booker one, I‘ll just read the WP ones that I am interested in. Also I won‘t read all of the Booker ones. @sarahbarnes (edited) 3w
sarahbarnes Same. Not as many on the WP list are speaking to me right now. There are a few on the Booker list I don‘t have easy access to but I‘m more drawn to the books on that list this year. 3w
Suet624 Goodness! These lists can sometimes feel overwhelming. 3w

A middle aged son drives his old and ill mother across Switzerland. They argue and confront the past. They‘re rich. Her father never stopped being an Nazi. The story is a mix of stream of consciousness, name dropping and little plot.
Not my favorite of the #InternationalBooker25 longlist but it has some good parts.

#ReadTheWorld2025 book 8 #Switzerland

Suet624 Hmmm… okay, off the list. 4w
Graywacke That sums it up. But I enjoyed it a lot. Loved his mom. 4w
BarbaraBB @Graywacke She was fun indeed. And sharp! What‘s your next #InternationalBooker read? 4w

Graywacke @BarbaraBB I‘m still working through what the library provides. I‘m reading Under the Eye of the Bird. I‘ll pick up The Book of Disappearance from the library today and read that next. Then Solenoid - which i own. 4w
britt_brooke Nice review and photo. This room aesthetic is totally my vibe. 🩷 3w
BarbaraBB @britt_brooke Thank you 😊 3w
sarahbarnes This is my next Booker list read that I‘ll be starting soon. Good to know to temper my expectations a bit. 3w
