In 1957 my grandpa built the house they are still living in now, at the age of 91. He and Grandma were talking yesterday about the adventure of building their own house and I asked Grandpa how he knew what to do. He replied, "I had a book!" and then pulled this one off the shelf. It's absolutely fascinating and full of details, blueprints, and careful instructions. However, I forgot to ask him if they came in under the $3500 mark.

Jari-chan That's amazing!🤩 2y
WriteForwardCoaching That is amazing! My husband‘s grandfather also built the house they still live in today. Grandpa passed away 2 years ago but Grandma still lives there and she is 94 years old. I don‘t know why I never thought to ask him how he knew how to build it. 2y
AmyG Wow. That must be fascinating. 2y

Bklover Wow! That would be a PROJECT! Especially with no customer service number to call with questions, no YouTube videos, no Google. 😯 2y

lauraisntwilder That is so cool! My dad built the house I grew up in and we have a really funny picture of him sitting in front of the newly-completed brick fireplace "reading" a book on masonry. ? 2y
Chelsea.Poole I love this!! 2y
TheAromaofBooks @Picking_Books - I wonder if their house was built around the same era? The introduction to this book talks about how basically because of the population boom, many young couples were building for themselves instead of waiting for a house to come up for sale. 2y
TheAromaofBooks @BKlover - Right?? My husband and I have done a lot of remodeling to our house, but I can't imagine trying to do it without watching YouTube videos along the way!! Grandpa's dad and father-in-law both helped him some, but neither of them were builders, either (one was a farmer and the other was a school teacher). My favorite part of the story is them using dynamite to blow out all the tree roots in the way of the basement! 😂 2y
TheAromaofBooks @lauraisntwilder - That is so fun! I may need to borrow that masonry book, as our chimney is looking a little sketchy 😂 2y
WriteForwardCoaching @TheAromaofBooks Yes it was around the same era. Grandpa came back from World War 2 and married grandma and built the house. That is so interesting! 2y
Bklover Can you imagine if you tried to use dynamite now?!!!! @TheAromaofBooks 2y
