Lessons at the School by the Sea: The Third School by the Sea Novel
Lessons at the School by the Sea: The Third School by the Sea Novel | Jenny Colgan
5 posts | 5 read
The summer holiday brings new passion and new challenges in the enchanting third book of Jenny Colgan's utterly delightful School by the Sea series, set at a girls' boarding school in Cornwall.School is out, following a bit of saucy scandal at Downey House...Beloved high school teacher Maggie Adair had been comfortably, if somewhat ambivalently, engaged to her dependable long-distance boyfriend Stan. But in the heat of summer, Maggie's attraction to her colleague David McDonald has caught fire. Now both are facing an uncertain future as they try to figure out how to stay committed to their careers--and each other.Meanwhile, the girls of Downey House--mercurial Fliss, glamorous Alice, and shy, hard-working Simone--have had long summers at home, which weren't quite the respite they had been hoping for. But the new school year is thankfully here, and it will bring new pupils and lots of fresh challenges for students and teachers alike at the school by the sea.

I finally got to realize my dream of trying Makkoli, the Korean fermented rice liquor, and I‘m in love. It‘s like sake and kombucha had a delicious baby, with a touch of coconut water in the mix. I‘m definitely getting it again.

I doubt I‘m in LOVE with Jenny Colgan‘s third School By the Sea novel, but it‘s highly readable so far and that‘s just what I need tonight. Bring on the boarding school shenanigans!

BiblioLitten Looks yum! Is it available in local liquor stores? 2w
xicanti @BiblioLitten they have it every once in a while, but not regularly. 😔 Last summer I got to try a peach-flavoured version, which was also delicious! 2w
BiblioLitten I‘ll keep an eye out for this!! 😍 2w
xicanti @BiblioLitten I hope you can find a bottle! It‘s wonderful. 2w

Mehso-so

I love reading J-Co books, but this series, read in order this time, is my least favorite. The lack of communication between sweet intelligent teachers David and Maggie is old by book 3, and by the time it finally resolved I was bored of reading it. And the girls - one grows big boobs, one is gay (oh, so that‘s why she‘s rockin‘ an unfashionable pixie cut - argh), one remains a brat …yawn.

KadaGul @marleed #LoveJennyColgan. Her stories are simple but the European landscape she ✒️ is quite refreshing and warming. 2y
marleed @KadaGul oh I agree, she‘s convinced me to add Scotland to my bucket list. This series was written earlier and re-released with new titles. I think she writes with more sensitivity (less stereotyping) in her later works. Even though this is my least favorite series, I‘ll continue if there‘s a book 4 because I just can‘t quit a J-Co series! 2y

It's obvious there was a decade-long break in the publication of this series, given the technology mentioned, but I do just love the characters and their circumstances. The perfect escape. #womensfiction #contemporaryfiction #boardingschool

KadaGul @kissmehardy I absolutely love ❤️ #JennyColgan. Funny story, my friend got the 📖 from #LFL and after that BOTH of Us started to collect her 📚. 2y
kissmehardy @KadaGul I love Polly's books and the Scottish bookshop books the best! 2y

I love Jenny Colgan's books and couldn't wait to read this one. I didn't realize it was the third book in what will eventually be a series of 6. I couldn't figure out why I ha until I Jenny explains in the introduction that the first 2 were published under a different name. She recommends Reading these then order but I have to say, I didn't read the first 2 (although I want to now) and I didn't have any problem picking up (cont in comments)...

TheHeartlandBookFairy this story and enjoying it thoroughly. Picture it, two neighboring boarding schools, one for boys, one for girls. Teachers from all walks. Students from all walks. Males and females, mostly separated but occasionally together. And you can only imagine what happens next... Loved the story, the complex characters. The setting. 2y
