A sweet, short and sharp little book that in large part I loved. Yet holding me back was a quite intense dislike of the main character that I never quite got past.

Set in England, 1960‘s. I loved all the details of the time, marmalade sauce and baked ham , dressing up in old fur coats to play ping-pong. This is Marianne‘s story, she‘s a wild dreamer , she‘s in love. Such an enjoyable book. I would highly recommend and I must look up more by Rose Tremain … any recommendations Littens ?
I feel like this was right book, right time for me - although it‘s a contemporary novel it‘s set during the 1950s & it was nice to read something that felt a bit old school. The protagonist is in love with a boy she met in school but he moves away & she ends up in a marriage she‘s not truly happy in (for a few reasons). It‘s a quick read although a sad one for the most part but I really loved the ‘twists‘ in it & how it portrays relationships.
This is a relatively short book, but despite that it does pack quite the punch! I had to read late into the night to finish this book as I needed to know what happened, & there was one or two shocks along the way that I just did not see coming. In fact I lay awake for the next couple of hours thinking over the book and was left with an overwhelming feeling of sadness for the main character. Not always that a book has quite as much an effect on me.
