There Should Have Been Eight
There Should Have Been Eight | Nalini Singh
10 posts | 10 read | 3 to read
In this chilling thriller from New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh, a remote estate in New Zealands Southern Alps hosts a reunion no one will ever forget. Seven friends. One last weekend. A mansion half in ruins. No room for lies. Someone is going to confess. Because there should have been eight. . . . They met when they were teenagers. Now theyre adults, and time has been kind to some and unkind to othersnone more so than to Bea, the one they lost nine long years ago. Theyve gathered to reminisce at Beas familys estate, a once-glorious mansion straight out of a gothic novel. Best friends, old flames, secret enemies, and new lovers are all under one roof. But when the weather turns and theyre snowed in at the edge of eternity, theres nowhere left to hide from their shared history. As the walls close in, the pretense of normality gives way to long-buried grief, bitterness, and rage. Underneath it all, theres the nagging feeling that Beas shocking death wasnt what it was claimed to be. And before the weekend is through, the truth will be unleashedno matter the cost. . . .

This is a creepy as hell book and I love it! A reunion of old friends who have fallen out of touch, but that is where any similarity to the reunion of old friends trope ends. The creepy estate, the dangerous weather, become characters in this twisty, strange thriller. Nothing and no one is as it seems and I did not see that ending coming. This is a really great read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I read as far as “creepy as hell” before deciding to see if the library has it (on order!!!) 8mo

I predicted the #greatplottwist but was interested to see how it was executed. In that regard, I was not disappointed. As others have said, there were many characters introduced all at once, which led to a somewhat clunky start, but once rolling the story was compelling and led to a slightly improbable but thrilling conclusion.

I spent most of yesterday reading this, so today I‘m catching up with posts!

The past two nights I have fallen asleep while trying to post about my readathon experience 😂

I reached my goal of reading at least one book from my NetGalley backlog. I had initially planned to read one that had been on my list for much longer, but this is the one I landed on and I‘m happy to cross one more off of my NetGalley list.

Thank you for hosting #JoyousJanuary, @Andrew65!

Started slow for me because there are so many characters to keep up with. I had trouble settling into the story with my digital copy, so I grabbed this print book to see if that would help-it did! Slowly the twists started coming until the fast-paced ending. It was a fun read. A locked-room murder mystery story with a little suspense too. I think the long length and slow start kept it from feeling as suspenseful as it was probably intended👇🏻

intothehallofbooks But a fun read nonetheless. I‘d like to thank Berkley Publishing and NetGalley for sending me a review copy. #JoyousJanuary 10mo
DGRachel Isn‘t it crazy how digital vs print can make such a difference? Christopher Fowler‘s books are like that for me - I cannot follow them on a Kobo/Kindle, but I devour them in print. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 10mo
intothehallofbooks @DGRachel It‘s so strange, isn‘t it? I give it a few chapters at the beginning and if I can‘t make heads or tails of things, I grab a physical copy or an audiobook and that usually works. I have no explanation for why it works though! 10mo

I have this December tradition where I turn out all the lights except my tree, open the blinds so I can watch the sky glow (the only thing I like about winter), and sit right next to the tree so I can see well enough to read.

This year, the tree‘s positioned so I can‘t see it AND the glowy sky from the chair beside it, so I‘ve pulled out my book light to keep the vibe going. The darker atmosphere is a perfect fit for this creepy book.

Blueberry I like candles in the dark with my Christmas 🎄. 11mo

I enjoyed Nalini Singh‘s first two thrillers and I was really looking forward to this one, but oof. It opens with seriously clunky character intros; like, just a step up from, “As you know, Bob…” territory. I would‘ve bailed if it was my first Singh. Since it‘s not, I pushed on through and am enjoying it a lot more now everyone‘s established.

Please also note my peanut butter luchador. He brought me joy.

xicanti And since I‘ve made these candies twice already this month and I‘m gearing up for a third batch by popular demand, here‘s the super-simple recipe: in a double boiler, melt 1 cup peanut butter, 1/4 cup butter, & 1 bag butterscotch chips. Fill candy moulds or make a slab in a baking pan. Chill until set. 11mo

This week‘s library haul features Nalini Singh‘s latest thriller, a knitting book, and two tiny Christmas things: a ghost story and an historical mystery. I strongly suspect the next volume of FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST I need is sitting there in the back, too, but the part of their computer system that manages holds went down this morning. Guess I‘ll grab it next week.

batsy Ooh! Those Wharton mysteries illustrated by Seth 😍 Can't find physical copies here but I'm glad they're available on Kindle. 12mo
xicanti @batsy I always gaze adoringly at these ghost story volumes at the bookstore, but they‘re so expensive for such little books. I‘m glad to know the library owns a few! 12mo

This is sort of a classic locked room mystery. 7 friends and a fiance are trapped on a remote NZ estate during a freak snowstorm. It's entertaining. Even if it's slightly predictable.
