Black AF History
Black AF History: The Un-Whitewashed Story of America | Michael Harriot
8 posts | 6 read | 17 to read
From acclaimed columnist and political commentator Michael Harriot, a searingly smart and bitingly hilarious retelling of American history that corrects the record and showcases the perspectives and experiences of Black Americans. Americas backstory is a whitewashed mythology implanted in our collective memory. It is the story of the pilgrims on the Mayflower building a new nation. It is George Washingtons cherry tree and Abraham Lincolns log cabin. It is the fantastic tale of slaves that spontaneously teleported themselves here with nothing but strong backs and negro spirituals. It is a sugarcoated legend based on an almost true story. It should come as no surprise that the dominant narrative of American history is blighted with errors and oversightsafter all, history books were written by white men with their perspectives at the forefront. It could even be said that the devaluation and erasure of the Black experience is as American as apple pie. In Black AF History, Michael Harriot presents a more accurate version of American history. Combining unapologetically provocative storytelling with meticulous research based on primary sources as well as the work of pioneering Black historians, scholars, and journalists, Harriot removes the white sugarcoating from the American story, placing Black people squarely at the center. With incisive wit, Harriot speaks hilarious truth to oppressive power, subverting conventional historical narratives with little-known stories about the experiences of Black Americans. From the African Americans who arrived before 1619 to the unenslavable bandit who inspired Americas first police force, this long overdue corrective provides a revealing look into our past that is as urgent as it is necessary. For too long, we have refused to acknowledge that American history is white history. Not this one. This history is Black AF.

This is incredible. If more history was taught this way I think so many more people would be history buffs. Well researched and fully engaging.

I really enjoyed this.

"If Ida B Wells had one gift, it was that she was born with what scientists now identify as the genetic marker IDGAF. Wells' uncompromising stance combined with her inability to compromise on even the slightest bit of racism and discrimination is what made her one of the fiercest truth tellers in the history of America."

#WeeklyForecast
I am about 40 pgs away from completing Light/uncommon stars SO good!
I am listening to the tagged on audio, I wish my history classes were taught like this in school!
#BookGoal is to finish my last 2 #WomensPrizeForFiction short list reads they both look incredible but very heavy, if I can get through them next week will be much lighter reads.

I have the tagged on audio for this week,
I am already a few pages into each of these. I wasn't too interested in Uncommon Stars beginning then 20 pages in we meet donut shop aliens and now I am all in 😍
Thunderclap is a Women's Prize long list for non-fiction I am struggling with it, but the book is very pretty great quality pages and photos of the paintings she talks about - recommend the physical book if it is on your list.

You 💯% need to read this book. Happily I went the audio route because this is narrated by the author who hosts the acclaimed podcast theGrio. It is an exceptional look back at American history that is personal and powerful. 🇺🇸

Nikki Haley needs to read this book! Even though Mr.Harriot sometimes uses humor to get his point across, this book is a serious look how the whitewashed history lessons of our youth do us a great disservice on understanding systemic racism, understanding how America was really made on the labor of others, and how laws & lawlessness were aimed at black Americans post slavery. A complicated & important history everyone should read.

US history has always been told through a white lens. Harriot changes that by telling it again, this time through a black lens. It‘s brilliantly done, including weaving humor throughout (as you might guess from the title), and balancing lighter tones with some of the darker bits. Outstanding.

Christine Great review! I‘m so eager to get to this one. 13mo
