While performing an authentic spirit medium show at Chinatown's illustrious Gris-Gris speakeasy in 1920s San Francisco, Aida Palmer is enlisted to help notorious bootlegger Winter Magnusson, the victim of a hex, banish the ghosts that haunt him and finds herself under the spell of this charming man. Original.

I really wanted to love this book but just did not connect with it. The mystery story doesn't really come much into play until the second half of the book, so this is primarily a romance. Not that there is anything wrong with that, I just didn't love the romance, and the pacing of the first half of the book was really slow.

Pickpick

This was not quite what I thought it was. It was more #romance than #paranormal or #mystery. I still enjoyed the story. I mean who doesn't love tall, hot bootleggers, ghosts and the 1920's? It may not have been what I was wantinf but it was still a good read. #historicalfiction

It‘s the roaring twenties, and San Francisco is a hotbed of illegal boozing, raw lust, and black magic. The fog-covered Bay Area can be an intoxicating scene, particularly when you specialize in spirits… This has been on my TBR for a couple of years now. I'll get to it eventually. #setinthe1920s #marchintoreading

Crinoline_Laphroaig I would read just to look at that beautiful cover. 8y
booksandsympathy @missnavigation That was what first caught my attention. 8y
JazzFeathers I vantaggi decide whether l want to read this or not. The 1920s, spirits, black magic... it's all my fare. But still... l don't know 8y
booksandsympathy @JazzFeathers I was undecided for a while. It sounded awesome, but sometimes these things don't turn out so awesome, you know? It has gotten pretty good reviews, so I figured I'll give it a try. 8y

After seeing the phrase "absolutely, positively" on page 36 in Bitter Spirits, I am thinking that my next book needs to be a reread of one of my favorite books: Absolutely, Positively by Jayne Ann Krentz. It has been too long since I last got together with Molly and Harry. (I last read it in January of 2015. ?)

I'll have to see how I feel after finishing this book, though. My mind can be fickle. ?

reader44ever I have sooo much love for this story! 😍❤ 8y

"Her mind made great, panicked leaps between the mundane--He smells pleasantly of soap and witch hazel--and the practical: How could another human being weigh so much? Is he filled with rocks?" ?

This delightful quote is on page 13. I laughed out loud on page 11, too. I am really going to enjoy this story. ?

Oh! This quote was prompted by Winter Magnusson's collapse onto Aida Palmer. The poor man is under some sort of a hex.

After a bit of deliberation (🤔😕), I think I‘m going to read this book (😄).

I did not have any books checked out from my library that are due soon with no hope of renewal (😮). So this book, which might be the next due (after I next renew it, I'll be at the max for renewals), called out to me when I looked over my list of books checked out. 😊
