The Flounder
The Flounder | Günter Grass
4 posts | 2 read | 4 to read
An immortal fisherman catches an immortal talking fish in the Stone Age, and they live eternally until modern times in Germany, bound by the man's insatiable pregnant wife and entanglements with various female cooks. The narrating fisherman uses his predicament to comment on gender and nutrition in society, as well as gloat over the fish's second capture and subsequent trial by women for his historical role in subjugating women.

#CoverLove #white this book was controversial when first published, I really loved it at the time .It‘s always been one of those what would you like to read again where it felt like the first time books. I‘m always wondering if I should read it again & maybe be disappointed or treasure the memory.

Eggs Tough decision. Perfect choice 👌🼠5mo

We've read some shorter texts by Grass in school - I didn't like them. Now I've wanted to give him another chance. Who knows, maybe I like his work better now that I'm older?

Well, I didn't. I respect his influence he had on literature and on the refurbishment of WWII, but that doesn't necessarily mean that I have to like him and/or his works. Or read any more of them.

andrew61 That sounds really interesting, it's years since i read The Tin Drum which i recall loving and I guess that would apply here as well. I'm adding this as i should revisit him. 7y
