The Wives: A Memoir | Simone Gorrindo
6 posts | 8 read | 3 to read
A powerful, intimate memoir of marriage and friendship that traces one womans experience joining a tightknit community of fellow army wives after leaving her New York City job to follow her enlisted husband. When her new husband joins an elite Army unit, Simone Gorrindo is uprooted from New York City and dropped into Columbus, Georgiaa town so foreign she might as well have landed on the moon. With her husband frequently deployed, Simone is left to find her place in this new world, aloneuntil she meets the wives. Gorrindo gives us an intimate look into the inner lives of a remarkable group of women and a tender, unflinching portrait of a marriage. A love story, an unforgettable coming-of-age tale, and a bracing tour of the intractable divisions that plague our country today, The Wives offers a rare and powerful gift: a hopeful stitch in the fabric of a torn America.

“There were just a few weeks left of the deployment. The wives were frustrated and wrung out, and the air had become charged with these emotions.”

Memoir of being an army wife-great writing, authentic characters, unputdownable! Setting is Fort Benning in Georgia in mid 2000s.

I spent 38 years as a Dept of Army civilian. Military wives were part of neighborhoods, my work environment, my friends, (my mother-in-law). I wasn‘t expecting this book to be insightful for me but it was. The whole enlisted vs officer‘s wife thing - boy, I get it. The kids thing - I get it. But my experiences were never with a community of special ops soldiers and their spouses - what they endure is a unique fraternity/sorority of emotion.

TheBookgeekFrau I recognize that gate! My infantryman daughter emerged with her blue cord 6 years ago ☺️ What a ride it's been! 7mo
marleed @TheBookgeekFrau Hey congrats to your daughter! It seemed this book was calling for a Fort Benning gate in the background! 7mo
TheBookgeekFrau @marleed Thank you💕 Also, thanks for the memories your background brought up. As crazy a time it was, it was also fun (at least for me and my husband, I'm sure my daughter would beg to differ 😆) 7mo

In her memoir Simone writes about being a fish out of water in the company of the other wives of the Unit and her reservations about military life but never shies away from portraying the strength, sacrifice, and intense bonds that these women share. I appreciated the raw examination of her feelings, her marriage. and the struggles she faced when her husband was deployed. I found this really compelling.

TheBookHippie I really enjoyed this read. Compelling is the right word. 7mo
