Magneto Testament
Magneto Testament | Greg Pak
8 posts | 11 read | 7 to read
Today, the whole world knows him as Magneto, the most radical champion of mutant rights that mankind has ever seen. But in 1935, he was just another schoolboy - who happened to be Jewish in Nazi Germany.

I let #xrecs fall by the wayside, but this is a good day to revive it.

MAGNETO TESTAMENT isn't a superhero story. It's a Holocaust narrative, and it's brutal. If you only ever read one X-Men comic, it should be this one.

The afterward also points out that for too many people, Magneto's backstory is their first exposure to the Holocaust. That's fucked up. Talk to your kids. Talk to their teachers about their curriculum. Make sure they know.

I've read Magneto Testament many times over the years and each time it brings me to tears. So great, so powerful. It's essential to any #XMen fan or comic fan in general.

WOW. If it weren‘t for “X-Men” in the title, you‘d never think this was part of a superhero universe & that‘s actually a good thing here. Incredibly powerful, emotional story that is as well-researched as any Holocaust novel, the end notes provide insight into how survivor accounts & historical records influenced plot and design decisions. Magneto‘s budding powers are only hinted at, allowing the historical importance of the story to come first.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds excellent! 7y

GondorGirl This is sitting on my TBR shelf right now. I think you just bumped it up the list. 7y
BookFreakOut @Kaylamburson @Riveted_Reader_Melissa This was my X title for 2017 #LitsyAtoZ, I knew I‘d probably pick up an X-Men comic but didn‘t expect to stumble upon one so moving and historically grounded. 7y
Kaylamburson Yes, I'm also trying to find a last minute X title for 2017, so this sounds perfect! @BookFreakOut 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BookFreakOut @Kaylamburson was just saying on another post that she still needed an X and this one sounded great to me! 7y
BookFreakOut @GondorGirl Do it! Worth every minute of the short amount of time it takes to read. 7y

I don't usually review X-Men material, but this one's important. It's not a superhero--or supervillain--story. It's a Holocaust narrative that pulls few punches.

And the Afterward makes the horrible point that for many comics readers, Magneto's backstory is their first real exposure to the Holocaust. That shouldn't be the case. We all need to familiarize ourselves with this, painful though it is, and we need to make sure kids know. Please.
