One of the Good Guys

Cole is the perfect husband; a romantic, supportive of his wife's career, keen to be a hands-on dad, not a big drinker. A good guy.So when his wife leaves him, he's floored. She was lucky to be with a man like him.Craving solitude, he accepts a job on the coast and quickly settles into his new life. Then he meets reclusive artist Lennie. And though she is quite different from the woman he'd expected, he believes he has finally found a soulmate. But as their relationship develops, two young women go missing while on a walk protesting gendered violence, right by where Cole and Lennie live. Finding themselves at the heart of a police investigation and media frenzy, Cole soon realises they don't know each other very well at all . . . If most men say they're one of the good guys, then why are so many women afraid to walk alone at night?

Not your typical thriller. A creative approach to a tough issue. The mixed-media, multiple POV makes it feel like a “brain candy” Gone Girl style novel, but is actually a thought provoking and, frankly, depressing exploration of society today. I enjoyed reading something a bit different, but I might need some time to sort of shake it off.

Book 16 of #ReadAway2024

This is a thought-provoking book in that it covers the topic of male violence against women and how endemic it is in patriarchal societies. And because of that, I wish I could like it. But it follows the format of a typical psychological thriller, a genre I am not fond of. It‘s not bad, and is probably a good read for someone who likes the genre.

This was a #Goldsboro book so I wasn't sure what to expect when it came. This will definitely be in my top 10 favorites suspense/thriller reading for this year. I listened and read as I had a road trip this past week and I didn't want to put the physical copy down...the storytelling is that good. And thought provoking! #bookspin @thearomaofbooks

A palate cleanser between several dense audiobooks was just what the doctor ordered with this one-day propulsive listen. British thriller focusing on gender relations and how little is required of men to be considered “one of the good guys”. Like go ahead and cook for your wife or girlfriend, say all the “good, feminist” stuff and bam! you‘re a winner. Nevermind some extremely troubling behaviors we will overlook. Packaged with intrigue.

CBee Ooo, this sounds good! 9mo

I definitely couldn‘t stop listening to this engaging and thought-provoking read. It really begs to be read (or listened to— the audio performance is really fantastic with a great production feel complete with sound effects and multiple performers!) with a book club because there‘s a lot to talk about! While the plot‘s main twist is easy to see coming, I still couldn‘t stop listening & found the theme of violence against women to be well handled!

BookLineNSinker I'm listening to this one now, and I agree with everything you're saying! It's great in audio form with the multimedia perspective. I've got an hour left and although it's a little predictable, I've loved it so far!! 10mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

One of the best thrillers I‘ve read!

The book has multiple POVs, which I love, and the progression of the story is paced in a way that keeps you hooked.

An insightful (and disturbing) look at how violence against women can be perpetrated under the mask of love.

I will be reading anything that Araminta Hall publishes (I‘ve previously read Our Kind of Cruelty and really enjoyed it, also).
