#RedRoseSeptember #catchup
There are more than #TwoTribes in the Philippines, in fact there are 134 ethnic groups, mostly indigenous, there. About a dozen tribes were put on display at the St. Louis Exposition, the most popular were the Igorrotes & a tribe of them was recruited & brought for display at Coney Island in 1905. I like to give this fascinating yet dismaying book about their treatment a little love now & then—it‘s a great book.

Coney Island in its heyday was definitely the place to #GetURFreakOn with its Luna Park amusements, side show attractions & “freak shows.” The tagged book is non-fiction about a Philippines aboriginal tribe that was displayed there in the early 1900s. An interesting & sobering read about their exploitation The bottom 3 are novels set there. I‘ve read Church of Marvels & the other 2 are loaded on my Kindle to get to one of these days.

Prairiegirl_reading Church of Marvels is on my tbr bookcase. I had completely forgotten about it until yesterday! 5y
DebinHawaii @Prairiegirl_reading I liked it so I hope you enjoy it. I just need to get to the other two. 📚📚📚😬📚📚📚📚📚 5y

This ebook not on file w Litsy but probably connected to the tagged book above. Got this via Amazon Prime free reading. Unreal that moms gave their premie babies to this doctor for a Coney Island sideshow. Even more wild that he saved many using the $$ for admission to create incubators. Short and so interesting.

Sometimes I think Amazon is watching me... 😱 This was my #augustphotochallenge #underhypedbook yesterday and today it's a daily deal for $1.99 (or free if you belong to Kindle Unlimited). Well worth it if you like history, politics, historical true crime, Coney Island settings, overlooked history... 👍📚😀

Laalaleighh Amazon is definitely watching us. It suggests things to me I only talk about. 👀 8y
k.reads Just bought this! Thanks for the recommendation! 8y
DebinHawaii @Laalaleighh Scary! 😱😱😱 8y
DebinHawaii @k.reads I hope you enjoy it. I found it a bit slow at the beginning as all of the people & details are introduced, but it quickly picks up. 👍 8y

#AugustPhotoChallenge #underhypedbook Since this book is about hype & exploitation of a tribe of Philippine aborigines by a corrupt promoter in 1905 Coney Island, it seemed theme-appropriate. Disturbing, well-researched & detailed-it made me angry & embarrassed for our county how the Igorrotes were portrayed as savages & made into a sideshow exhibit. A bit slow to start but this overlooked book & bit of history is absorbing & worth learning about.
