Whiskey Tender: A Memoir | Deborah Taffa
2 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
"Whiskey Tender is a memoir of family and survival, coming-of-age on and off the reservation, and the frictions between being raised to strive towards the American dream while also coming into an understanding of how the narratives of the Quechan Nation and Laguna Pueblo heritages have been excluded from the central mythologies and structures of America"--

Pickpick

I always appreciate a memoir that shows us a lived experience, or in this case the story of a family, that also manages to paint a broader image of American life. A memoir about belonging and knowing where and who you came from. Taffa‘s grandparents attended the Native American boarding schools.

Bailedbailed

This book is billed as memoir, but it‘s also a history. And that‘s where my problems arise. She is giving history and even putting quote marks in without providing a single citation. This may be meticulously researched and fully accurate, but without a single page of end material, it just doesn‘t work for me.

NBA longlist, nonfiction
