Stories on Rye collects more than 100 stories from the famed LA deli's patrons and employees, capturing their experiences and memories at Canter's since it first opened in 1931. Gina Canter's beautiful illustrations celebrate both the place and its patrons, as voices from the past join the present, to demonstrate that nostalgia can be very much alive. Like the Canter's booths that have welcomed movie stars and presidents alongside countless everyday people, the book contains a vast range of memories. Most significant, perhaps, is its connection to the Jewish heritage, such as the holocaust survivor who reunites with her family at Canter's after being separated for over 40 years. Hilarious, touching and perhaps a little magical, Stories on Rye are a testament to the human spirit, and to a restaurant that shares its legacy with each of its patrons.

Snaps of Canters and the signed book illustrated by the granddaughter of its founder, Gina Canter. My usual meal I order vanilla egg cream potato pancakes and not pictured pastrami on rye. Afterwards I hit up the bakery counter for cookies and hamantaschen all of which I failed to get pictures of before they were devoured.

Tonight‘s #hyggehourreadathon was enjoying this book I bought yesterday from one of my all time favorite eateries. It‘s the only place I know of in LA that comes close to NYC deli & it‘s delish. Not only is it good eating but it‘s a storied restaurant that started in the 1930‘s & is still going strong.

mrp27 Known as a hot spot for musicians to pop into after playing the Whiskey on Sunset Blvd to movie producers and politicians taking meetings everyone from Bono to Janis Joplin to Prince to JFK and Obama have eaten here. This book shares the stories of the waiters and waitresses that waited on them and to the everyday people that eat here with their families. A place where a Jewish deli became a reunion site for families separated by the holocaust. 12mo

Chrissyreadit I completely miss NYC delis! different in different neighborhoods but there is nothing like them. TBH i miss a lot about the food scene in NYC- real pizza (even though i do not eat dairy), knishes, bagels, etc… 12mo

mrp27 @Chrissyreadit Totally agree! There is nothing like NYC food and my favorite pizza was at Spumoni Gardens. California has some of the best Mexican but I miss so much NYC food. 12mo
