When I was trying to decide whether to dnf this, I read a review that called it “all tell no show” and that is completely, infuriatingly accurate. There‘s a workplace drama and a post-colonial exploitation adventure story that are juxtaposed. Almost all plot is related via monologue from two narrators, sometimes secondhand, and is rife with judgement in which the reader is invited to partake. So, all in all not a comfortable or even all that ⬇️

Larkken enjoyable read, but I found the structure oddly engrossing given how obnoxious it was and ended up really plowing through it to finish it. I enjoyed knowing more about the history of soccer? Not my favorite #tob25 longlist entry but it did impress me! (edited) 2d
BarbaraBB Good to know. I somehow have been intrigued by this one. 2d
Hooked_on_books This one was lower on my list of options and now I‘ve pushed it even lower. My library has it, but I really don‘t see myself picking it up. Thanks for your review, it was helpful! 2d

We lost power earlier this week. The only thing to do was cuddle by the fireplace to read!
I have mixed feelings about this book. First off, must love soccer. (I do!) Second, it‘s too long. A pair of half brothers venture to discover the next big talent in soccer: a young boy named Godwin. The problem is, they don‘t know where he is. Very nice writing but I was disinterested in the office politics section, though it does come together in the end.

Chelsea.Poole @BarbaraBB you asked about this one — I wouldn‘t rush out to get it, especially since it didn‘t make the shortlist. It was tedious for me at several points. The soccer references made up for it some. 1mo
BarbaraBB Thanks for the heads up. I was triggered by the soccer references indeed but I won‘t hurry to read it. 1mo
sarahbarnes Great pic! Hope you got power back, though. 1mo

TheKidUpstairs I was really looking forward to this one! I've almost bought it a few times, but decided to wait until it was a paperback. I definitely still want to try it, but maybe I'll switch that to a library borrow :) 1mo
Chelsea.Poole @TheKidUpstairs it may work better for you! I don‘t have much to say against it, but I know it won‘t make my top favorites of the year. I‘m reading one now I recognized from you and enjoying 1mo

Mostly #tob25 long list titles, with a few nonfiction thrown in.

I‘m halfway through Code Dependent and just started Godwin. Both good so far!
