'Imagine a young man on his way to a less-than-thirty-second event - the loss of his left hand, long before he reached middle age.'While reporting a story from India, a New York television journalist has his left hand eaten by a lion; millions of TV viewers witness the accident. In Boston, a renowned hand surgeon awaits the opportunity to perform the nation's first hand transplant. A married woman in Wisconsin wants to give the one-handed reporter her husband's left hand, that is, after her husband dies. But the husband is alive, relatively young, and healthy...

Mehso-so

It is a solid so so/meh. On a different day it might have been a pick. There were some super quirky, charming characters that normally make up for a lot for me.

But, for whatever reason, it was not enough to over come the ho-hum-ness of a man losing his hand to a lion and having the widow of his hand transplant donor require visiting rights with the hand.
I know.
What exactly is wrong with me????

BookishMe I am trying to process what I just read about the plot 🤔🙄😅 5y
nanuska_153 The only John Irving book I've read is The world according to Garp and I also found it very weird (not to mention misogynistic and transphobic) 5y
runswithscissors007 @BookishMe ha! you would think I would find it more gripping right? sheesh. 5y
runswithscissors007 @nanuska_153 I remember the same about the book. But I do like weird. I feel like the movie did a better job of embracing the trans character but it was a long time ago when I watched it and I was young. 5y

“He had a far simpler, albeit more athletic method of preventing Medea from eating her own shit. He got to her turds first with his lacrosse stick. ....on occasion Irma had seen him take a shot at a squirrel in a tree clear across Brattle Street. Dr. Zajac missed every time, but the gesture went straight to Irma‘s heart.”
(Re: silly and random from previous post! Like Irma I am charmed but still struggling to get into the book!)

Struggling to read this. But it is how I remember John Irving. Seemingly random and silly and then poof! Just a bit silly but not so random. So far I am still at silly and random....💗🤞🏼

Until halfway through, I didn't quite care for the book, but then things started to fall into place.

Trying to finish this one today, but could use a third hand. First to hold book, second turn pages, and the third to pet the dog who is freaking out because of the air show.

Day 2 of Jazz Fest in NOLA and book 2 is this. Always nice to have something to read while you wait in lines or for the next band to start.
