Breed: A Novel | Chase Novak
Critically celebrated novelist Scott Spencer delivers a Rosemary's Baby-like novel of gothic horror, set against the backdrop of modern-day Upper East Side Manhattan. Alex and Leslie Twisden lead charmed lives-fabulous jobs, a luxurious town house on Manhattan's Upper East Side, a passionate marriage. What they don't have is a child, and as they try one infertility treatment after the next, yearning turns into obsession. As a last-ditch attempt to make their dream of parenthood come true, Alex and Leslie travel deep into Slovenia, where they submit to a painful and terrifying procedure that finally gives them what they so fervently desire . . . but with awful consequences. Ten years later, cosseted and adored but living in a house of secrets, the twins Adam and Alice find themselves locked into their rooms every night, with sounds coming from their parents' bedroom getting progressively louder, more violent, and more disturbing. Driven to a desperate search for answers, Adam and Alice set out on a quest to learn the true nature of the man and woman who raised them. Their discovery will upend everything they thought they knew about their parents and will reveal a threat so horrible that it must be escaped, at any cost.

There‘s a definite Rosemary‘s Baby-ish NYC vibe here. The writing is good, the characters are interesting, there‘s dark humor, it‘s about to be made into a movie. Novak doesn‘t break for chapters indicating that this is the type of story that‘s meant to be read at a breakneck speed. A very enjoyable, occasionally gasp-inducing read for this jaded horror fan. #littensdressedinblood #horror

CouronneDhiver I'm curious... checking if the library has this one available. Thanks! 7y
RadicalReader @LauraJ love when authors show readers how their book is meant to be enjoyed and how quickly their book speedometer guides them to the finish. Based on the inclusion or omission of chapters! 7y

Enjoying this more than I expected to. There aren‘t any chapters, which makes it read quickly.

RadicalReader @LauraJ this book sounds absolutely incredible had to add it to my TBR list 7y
LauraJ @RadicalReader I‘m surprised it doesn‘t have better reviews. 7y

Mehso-so

This is a decent horror novel about an infertile couple submitting to an experimental fertility treatment that ends up having terrifying consequences. Shades of body horror and familial strife, the story propels forward at a quick pace and has good characters, but ultimately not enough new ground broken for my taste.

RadicalReader @WeAreLegion what book did live up to your expectations that you would recommend? 7y
WeAreLegion I recommend CONSUMED by film director David Cronenberg. Body horror from the master. 7y
