Themes: Historical Fiction, Irish Folklore, Dual Timelines

This was a sweet read, perfect for reading in a comfy chair with a blanket and a cup of something warm to drink. It started a bit slow for me, but then I was hooked and couldn‘t put it down. It really made me want to re-read “Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell” by Susanna Clarke 🧚

The main story here is of an Irish woman in 1910 who is delighted when an American man comes to her village to collect local stories about fairies. It‘s framed by a modern storyline of an American woman at loose ends in Ireland. A bit skimpy but charming. A low pick for me.

I read this for #FoodandLit (Ireland) and loved it. It's about a woman trying to find herself and ends up in Ireland on a whim. Great characters! @Catsandbooks @Texreader One spot for #ISpyBingoFeb @TheAromaofBooks #Read2025 @DieAReader

I chased the dogs all around the house before I got Geo to sort of halfway pose with THE STORY COLLECTOR, and I maybe shouldn‘t have bothered because it was resoundingly okay. Not bad, but also not especially gripping— though I‘m sure for some people, its treatment of particular kinds of grief makes it exactly the book they‘ve always needed.

This was a charming book. I really enjoyed the authors previous book, the lost bookshop. The story collector is quite different, and not as good in my opinion. However, it is a nice little romcom set in the charming Irish countryside amongst The Good People.
