Today is the 39th anniversary of the Challenger Disaster. I was in kindergarten at the time. Thankfully, my class did not watch the launch. Folks who were alive then, do you remember where you were that day?

My friend Stephi wrote this great book about Ellison Onizuka, one of the Challenger astronauts.

TheBookHippie Kindergarten 😂🤣😂 Yah. I was working, clinicals- nursing senior year college- we watched on TV in break room. My baby brother however watched in school. 1mo
Bookwormjillk I was in second grade. We weren‘t going to watch the launch but we were going to watch a broadcast shortly after. I remember another teacher coming in, shaking her head, and wheeling the TV out. I also liked 1mo

TieDyeDude That is cool that your friend did a whole series of books on Asian Americans! I was only a few months old at the time of the Challenger launch... 1mo
lil1inblue I was in 1st grade. The older kids in school watched the launch, but we did not. I do remember my teacher reacting to the news. Another teacher stopped in to tell her. We were all really confused.
Thanks for sharing your friend's book! I'd love to get the series for my niblings!

AmyG I had just had a baby 3 months ago. I remember sitting in the den and watching this with my son laying on the floor. I will never forget it. 😢 1mo
Kerrbearlib @AmyG it was an unforgettable moment for sure. 1mo
Kerrbearlib @lil1inblue you‘re welcome! It‘s a great series. I really like the Michelle Kwan book, too. 1mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG How did we get this old 😂😂😂 1mo
AkashaVampie I turned 39 last month so, I was just born. 1mo
Kerrbearlib @AkashaVampie @TieDyeDude so no memories of the event for you 😆 Thank you for sharing! (edited) 1mo
Kerrbearlib @TieDyeDude it is a really cool series! Stephi is a great writer! 1mo
Kerrbearlib @TheBookHippie thank you for sharing your memory. Were there a lot of you watching in the break room? 1mo
Kerrbearlib @Bookwormjillk that‘s good that your class was going to watch it later & that you didn‘t see it live. I can picture the teacher coming in and wheeling the TV away. 1mo
Kerrbearlib @lil1inblue that must have been very confusing for your class. How did your teacher react? I can‘t imagine what that was like for teachers, having to explain to the kids while processing the shock. 1mo
TheBookHippie @Kerrbearlib everyone that could crowded in. We were stunned. 1mo
DogMomIrene I was in high school. I didn‘t see it live, but during passing period a bunch of students were outside the journalism classroom. They had posted multiple copies of the AP story on their glass windows with a huge sign written in Sharpie that the Challenger Exploded! We were queuing up to read the details quickly. I can‘t remember if I was late to my next class, but if I was I don‘t think there were consequences. Awful day. 1mo
