Hagakure: The Secret Wisdom of the Samurai
Hagakure: The Secret Wisdom of the Samurai | Yamamoto Tsunetomo
7 posts | 16 read | 8 to read
The comprehensive and accurate edition of the Hagakure is a must-have for serious martial artists or fans of samurai and the bushido code. The Hagakure is one of the most influential of all Japanese texts--written nearly 300 years ago by Yamamoto Tsunetomo to summarize the very essence of the Japanese Samurai bushido ("warrior") spirit. Its influence has been felt throughout the world, and yet its existence is scarcely known to many Westerners. This is the first translation to include the complete first two books of the Hagakure and the most reliable and authentic passages contained within the third book; all other English translations published previously have been fragmentary and incomplete. Alex Bennett's wholly new and highly readable translation of this essential work includes extensive footnotes that serve to fill in many cultural and historical gaps in the previous translations. This unique combination of readability and scholarship gives Hagakure: The Secret Wisdom of the Samurai a distinct advantage over all previous English editions.

Hey! The book of samurai wisdom that I became enamored with in college is the Audible Daily Deal!

You must commit yourself to the decision in the span of seven breaths!

alanacristin Thanks for the tip! Looks intriguing for sure. 7y

Here‘s my favorite maxim from the code of the Samurai:

“There is something to be learned from a rainstorm. When meeting with a sudden shower, you try not to get wet and run quickly along the road. But doing such things as passing under the eaves of houses, you still get wet. When you are resolved from the beginning, you will not be perplexed, though you will still get the same soaking. This understanding extends to everything.”

I‘ve never been one for #SelfImprovement books, but for a time in college, inspired by the film Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, me and some friends all dubbed ourselves the Brotherhood of the Crimson Dawn and studied the code of Bushido.

I still remember some:

“Make all decisions within the space of seven breaths”

and

“Commit yourself to a task so that even if your head were to be cut off you could perform one more act with certainty.”

EvieBee What a nice throwback! 7y

Ever since I watched Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (my 8th favorite movie of all time) back in high school, ancient Japan and Samurai lore have been a #subjectIlove @jess.how #17booklove

Leniverse I'm not sure I can do a top 10 movies list, but I can certainly state agreement that Ghost Dog is excellent. ❤️ 8y
LeahBergen Have you ever seen Haruki Kadokawa's Heaven and Earth? I was a samurai extra in that movie. 😂 #FunFact 8y

Pickpick

"I‘ll give you the answer to the question What is most important to the heart of a warrior? The answer is, To desire with one‘s very soul every second of every day to accomplish one‘s aim."
Finished it on audio, I highly recommend the narration by Brian Nishii. An Insightful view on the mindset of the samurai, once you get over the part on the proper way to decapitate someone... This was written in peace times and may just be an idealized view.

respekt1111 Why does the cover have the biohazard symbol? Do you know? 8y
Faibka @respekt1111 I have no idea, I've seen other covers with an emblem showcasing three interlacing cranes which, when simplified, is exactly this symbol. I'm not sure if the crane symbol was an actual emblem but now I'm curious and will investigate 8y
Faibka @respekt1111 couldn't find anything, maybe the designers thought it looked cool 🤔 8y
respekt1111 Interesting...Maybe it's the origin! Cool! 8y
