Sky Daddy: 'Deliciously weird' Rachel Yoder, author of Nightbitch | Kate Folk

'Audaciously imagined. Slyly executed. Surprisingly tender. Deliciously weird' RACHEL YODER, author of NIGHTBITCH 'Buckle up, it's one hell of a ride' LITERARY HUB, Most anticipated books of 2025 'Get your boarding pass out and get ready for some turbulence. Sky Daddy is insane' GARY SHTEYNGART, author of OUR COUNTRY FRIENDS 'A dog whistle for the true freaks - never have I felt so seen! I loved it' RITA BULLWINKEL, author of the Booker Prize-longlisted HEADSHOT 'Breathtakingly audacious' LING MA, author of Severance Linda makes $20 an hour as a content moderator, flagging comments that violate a tech conglomerate's terms and conditions. Each night, she returns to the windowless room in a garage that she rents from a family who pretend she isn't there. But once a month, she escapes to San Francisco International Airport for a clandestine meeting on the cheapest flight out that night. Linda's secret is that she's sexually attracted to planes: their intelligent windscreens, sleek fuselages and powerful engines make her feel a way that no human lover ever could. Linda believes her destiny is to someday 'marry' one of her suitors by dying in a plane crash, a catastrophic event that would unite her with her soulmate plane for eternity. So when her co-worker Karina invites her to join a group of women using vision boards to manifest their desires, she can't resist the chance to hasten her romantic fate. However, as the vision boards seem to manifest items more quickly - and more literally - than Linda had expected, the carefully balanced elements of her life begin to spin out of her control, and she must choose between maintaining the trappings of normalcy or launching herself headlong towards her greatest dream. It is strange and wild and so enjoyable' NetGalley reviewer, ? ? ? ? ? 'As soon as I saw Sky Daddy was available, I stopped everything and ran (digitally) to NetGalley to beg/plead/scream/cry for the book. It is everything I hoped it would be and more. Do yourself a favour and pick up this original and engaging book' NetGalley reviewer, ? ? ? ? ? 'This book was absolutely wild . . . I laughed out loud at parts of this and I truly had the best time with this. The concept is absurd but it made for a brilliant novel' NetGalley reviewer, ? ? ? ? ? 'This is one of my most anticipated reads of 2025 and boy did it live up to my expectations. Such a quirky book but really fascinating to read. I really loved the characters, the storyline, and just how downright weird it was! 100% recommend if you love your books weird and wild. Well done again Kate Folk!!' NetGalley reviewer, ? ? ? ? ?

This was interesting, I really enjoyed it. At 50 pages in I worried that the book was going to be too long, it is "quirky" and often those books cannot be tolerated for a very long time, but this turned out to be perfect length. There were enough side characters and story lines to keep the story moving along, and the main thread - Linda's intense desire to marry a plane - was well balanced. I have always thought objectophilia was fascinating.

janeycanuck I love that you read it on a plane. 3w
ChaoticMissAdventures @janeycanuck I don't have a fear of flying so I think it was the perfect place (I even waited a month so I could read it while flying!) but I think if a person does fear flying, even a bit, probably not a great idea given the topics 😀 3w
janeycanuck @ChaoticMissAdventures Nice! I brought Everytime I go on Vacation Someone Dies with me on my travels and I‘m interested to see if anyone comments 3w

No better place to read this than the airport and on a plane 😂

So incredibly unhinged, but I couldn‘t stop reading it. The writing is superb. The premise is WILD. There‘s an underlying humor that‘s not quite enough to shadow the incredible sadness of the characters. Definitely not one I‘m going to forget and not one I can recommend to just anyone…😬🤭

No kink shaming, but Linda wants to marry an airplane. I'm not sure I quite grapsed the allegory there, but the book was delightfully weird, and it kept me entertained the whole time. Flying will never be the same.

Are all books about grief and longing or just the ones published lately….OR, am I getting older and reading everything through a different lens thanks to my crushing anxiety??
Anyhoo—this is quite a writing prompt: “a woman wants to marry a plane” and go. Folk did this justice! I was all in! This fits right in with the weird girl books like a few I‘ll tag below. Ultimately, female friendship and human connection prevail.

ChaoticMissAdventures I also loved One's Company! I do feel like there are more grief books than there used to be. I am rarely in the mood for it so I find myself sifting through more titles. I am going to read Sky Daddy, so glad to hear you enjoyed it! 2mo
BarbaraBB I‘ve bee curious about this one. Glad you enjoyed it! 2mo
Reggie Horror. Last year and the year before. Someone had cancer and died, someone‘s child died, someone‘s mother died, someone‘s significant other died. It was all grief for a long time. Agree. 2mo
pdxannie Oh good! I‘m waiting for this at the library and now I‘m even more excited for it! 2mo

Linda is…different. 😬 My brother is a pilot, so Linda‘s ultimate wish makes me squirm. That said, she is so deliciously weird that I cannot stop listening to this book! It should be a complete turnoff but, at this point (I‘m only on chapter two), I‘m all in for the ride (flight? Journey? Whatever. I‘m in!)

Ruthiella This book sounds so weird! I must read it! 😅 3mo
GingerAntics Good grief, what is this wish? 3mo
FashionableObserver @GingerAntics I‘d love to tell you, but I need you to gasp the way I gasped when it‘s revealed. 😈 (It‘s revealed very early in the book) 3mo
FashionableObserver @Ruthiella You absolutely must! It is so strange that it‘s delightful! 3mo

I approached this book about a woman who wants to marry a plane with caution, because what a premise! But it was weird in a way that really worked for me and I ended up really loving it! It‘s wildly creative and quirky and I can‘t wait to see what Kate Folk does next.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A bizarre and stinging satire on modern dating. I think? This was weird, y‘all, but I loved the characters and writing.
