The Sun Was Electric Light
The Sun Was Electric Light | Rachel Morton

'I read this pure, pained, beautiful book in a single burst, and emerged from it with heart and nerves rinsed clean.' - Helen Garner Disillusioned with her life in New York, Ruth returns to a lake town in Guatemala where she had been happy a decade earlier. There, in Panajachel, she meets two very different women: the calm and practical Emilie, and the turbulent and intoxicating Carmen. Deciding to stay and build a life at the lake, Ruth finds work first as a nanny to a wealthy local family, then as an English teacher at a village school. Meanwhile she becomes increasingly infatuated by her friendship with Carmen, pushing away the stability of her connection with Emilie. As Carmen's fragile relationship with the world splinters, the difference between being a visitor and truly belonging becomes clear, and Ruth is forced to act.

Pickpick

#Read2925

I think this is my final review of May, completed last week for #FictionalTraveler #SpanishSpeaking & the 6th of my #Roll100 picks for May (#4: Any BOTM). I‘ve put off reviewing it because I‘m still not sure how I feel about it. It‘s a quiet book about grief, depression & finding your life. Ruth leaves her job in NYC for a lake town in Guatemala, a place she felt most real in when she was there years before. It sort of meanders, ⬇️

DebinHawaii …which made me restless but there is a stark beauty in the writing. I think the challenge to me is I never felt close to Ruth‘s character or the characters in the relationships she formed with two different women. I did like the scenes set around Ruth‘s experiences as an expat & overall, I give it a soft pick. This was a #BOTM early release & doesn‘t publish elsewhere until July. 3d

Choosing this recent #BOTM pick as my #FictionalTraveler selection for May #SpanishSpeaking as it‘s set in Guatemala. It‘s also one of my #Roll100 May picks #4: Any BOTM.
