Jason Carrillo is a jock with a steady girlfriend, but he can't stop dreaming about sex...with other guys. Kyle Meeks doesn't look gay, but he is. And he hopes he never has to tell anyone -- especially his parents. Nelson Glassman is "out" to the entire world, but he can't tell the boy he loves that he wants to be more than just friends. Three teenage boys, coming of age and out of the closet. In a revealing debut novel that percolates with passion and wit, Alex Sanchez follows these very different high-school seniors as their struggles with sexuality and intolerance draw them into a triangle of love, betrayal, and ultimately, friendship.

Just finished it and I really liked it. Can definitely see the books age just by reading it, but I don‘t feel like lit takes away much from the book.

tonyahoswalt When I first started working in Teen Services at my library, I was surprised to discover Matt Boomer on the cover of a book, but I did my research and confirmed it is indeed him. 6y

I put RAINBOW BOYS in the Little Free Library this afternoon and was super excited to see my old copies of THE LIKENESS and THE FLOWERS OF WAR have cycled back in. I've gotta hurry up and read the books I've taken so I can return them and give someone else the same thrill.

This was, like, THE gay YA novel when I was a brand new adult in the early 2000s, which means some elements are pretty dated now. That said, I'm sure this story of three 17-year-old boys (two gay; one bi) who figure themselves out while they fight to establish a Gay-Straight Alliance still has plenty of relevance for contemporary teenagers. The emotions ring true and the challenges the characters face feel real.

xicanti The book got me thinking about my own high school experience, too. We didn't have a GSA. I didn't know a single openly queer student, and I was a Theatre Kid who hung around in the art room. I graduated in 2001, the year RAINBOW BOYS was published. I hope things are different for today's high schoolers; maybe due, in part, to this book and others like it? (edited) 6y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk *quick google to check* Yep, that guy on the right is actor Noah Segan, lucky rabbit‘s foot of director Rian Johnson. Noah‘s been in all his films including a blink-and-you‘ll-miss-it appearance in The Last Jedi. 6y

I didn't know what book I could use for today's prompt so I did a search on Mexican Authors. I read this book when I was in high school and I think it's so cool that Alex Sanchez is Mexican-American author! #day5 #mexicanormexicanamericanwriters #maybookflowers

As a future English teacher .. read this book for my YA Lit class. It was fantastic! Couldn't put the book down. Book tells the story from the perspective of three young boys who deal with being gay.. not to mention love, loss, acceptance, and so much more.
