Hidden away in an Oxford back street is a crumbling Georgian mansion, unknown to any but the few who possess a key to its unassuming front gate. Its owner is the mercurial, charismatic Mark Winters, whose rackety trust-fund upbringing has left him as troubled and unpredictable as he is wildly promiscuous. Mark gathers around him an impressionable group of students: glamorous Emmanuella, who always has a new boyfriend in tow; Franny and Simon, best friends and occasional lovers; musician Jess, whose calm exterior hides passionate depths. And James, already damaged by Oxford and looking for a group to belong to. For a time they live in a charmed world of learning and parties and love affairs. But university is no grounding for adult life, and when, years later, tragedy strikes they are entirely unprepared. Universal in its themes of ambition, desire and betrayal, this spellbinding novel reflects the truth that the lessons life teaches often come too late.

1. Kids are skiing in Sweden so we slept in after a big night watching live bands & fireworks, pub crawling & crashing parties. I made a big breakfast then we walked to the beach for a refreshing 🏊‍♀️ . Afterwards we laid around in the ☀️. The arvo was spent drinking poor man‘s margaritas in the hammock and reading. Now I am having a long bath with a glass of Shiraz while Stew makes the bed & chicken roasts in the oven. Bliss! 2. Tagged. 3.

Rissreads Your day sounds divine 😍 5y
MrsMalaprop What a fabulous day. But I have ask, what are poor man‘s margaritas? 5y
LapReader @MrsMalaprop it‘s a margarita made up out of what you have in the house on New Year‘s Day. We used Lift instead of limes. 5y

Mehso-so

Some oxford novels make me feel weird, even though Alderman went there lots rankled with me, yet more gorgeous aristocrats doing cocaine. The writing was good but James was whiny (his parents pay his bills but he has an existential crisis about not having a trust fund and having to work for his degree). For the author of The Power and Disobedience, I wish the women had had more to do, just being stoic and getting cheated on.

Hooked_on_books The cover of this one is kind of fascinating while also slightly nauseating. 5y
CarolynM I didn't think much of this one either. 5y
Emilymdxn @CarolynM glad I wasn‘t the only one! 5y
Emilymdxn @Hooked_on_books yeah I can‘t put my finger on why it weirds me out so much but I can‘t stop looking at it, very successful at being unsettling! 5y

ANZAC Day is a huge deal in Australia. Here I am after rising early to organise the kids to march with their Scout group then in the evening consuming a very nice 2010 bottle of Darenberg Shiraz as captured by my partner when he finally came to bed at god knows what hour after playing two up all day. I am loving your pick @Sarz #LMPBC @suvata #GroupX

Nute Girl, I feel you!😉 6y

5 ⭐
I think I love Naomi Alderman. This is the second book I've read by her this year and both have been 5 stars. Her writing is just beautiful, her stories captivating. This one isn't as good as The Power - I thought it dragged in some bits - but I really enjoyed reading it.

This is my pick for #lmpbc #groupx - it's on its way to @LapReader now (at least, I think I'm sending to you this round?)
@thegreensofa @BecH

LapReader I‘m no. 1 on the list so if you are number 4 then that is correct. Sounds like a great pick. 6y
riversong153 I really loved The Power 6y
CarolynM I didn't love this one, but I did love The Power and even more so 6y

It took me a little while to really feel this story. I was unsure about a female author cresting a male character, in the first person. However, I liked how she did so. It did have tones of The Secret History which is one of my favourite books.
I've read The Power and found d this very different!
