6 posts | 10 read | 3 to read
The children of U.S. small-town Alexandria are just trying to live like normal teens until their parents promised return from a mysterious, four-year religious pilgrimage, and Ben Schiller is no exception. Shes just trying to take care of her sister, keep faith that her parents will come back, and get through her teen years as painlessly as possible. But her relationship with her best friend is changing, her younger sister is hiding a dark secret, and a terrible tragedy is coming for them all.

This graphic novel was fine, though I felt it was miscategorised as horror on the rec list I got it from. Yes there are horror tropes but in general it was just teenagers (who were all drawn identically regardless of some apparently being different ages, subcultures and genders?) hanging out. I tried to find the concept and context interesting but mostly just didn‘t.

Kind of a clever take on horror tropes, and I might have appreciated it more if I were a horror fan. I was not a fan of the art - the characters were hard to distinguish. Cool twist at the end, though.

Visited San Francisco today and focused on the bookshops. I restrained myself, though. 😉 So excited to read these!

It's difficult for me to say a lot about this book, because I want to re-read it. By the time I finished it, I was aware that Liz Suburbia had put in so many subtle details and themes throughoyt the graphic novel that it just wasn't possible to grasp it all in one read. What I can say that this is a transformative piece for the world of graphic literature, well thought out and well executed. I can't wait to dive back in!
