The Silence of Bonaventure Arrow
The Silence of Bonaventure Arrow: A Novel | Rita Leganski
8 posts | 15 read | 13 to read
Conceived in love and possibility, Bonaventure Arrow didn't make a peep when he was born, and the doctor nearly took him for dead. No one knows that Bonaventure's silence is filled with resonancea miraculous gift of rarified hearing that encompasses the Universe of Every Single Sound. Growing up in the big house on Christopher Street in Bayou Cymbaline, Bonaventure can hear flowers grow, a thousand shades of blue, and the miniature tempests that rage inside raindrops. He can also hear the gentle voice of his father, William Arrow, shot dead before Bonaventure was born by a mysterious stranger known only as the Wanderer.Bonaventure's remarkable gift of listening promises salvation to the souls who love him: his beautiful young mother, Dancy, haunted by the death of her husband; his Grand-mre Letice, plagued by grief and a long-buried guilt she locks away in a chapel; and his father, William, whose roaming spirit must fix the wreckage of the past. With the help of Trinidad Prefontaine, a Creole housekeeper endowed with her own special gifts, Bonaventure will find the key to long-buried mysteries and soothe a chorus of family secrets clamoring to be healed.

I went to a tiny bookstore in the bottom part of the state and they had so many books, new and very old, that I‘ve read and loved. It felt like my own personal library. After talking with the bookseller, she suggested I might like this one and considering we seem to have the same taste I purchased it. I loved it. Magical realism is not generally my jam, but this involved a mute boy and his loving mother and grandmother who have suffered losses. 🔽

Suet624 Bonaventure, the young boy, can hear things that no one else can. The blink of an eye, the cosmos, desire, sorrow. Colors have a sound to them. This book is a journey, as all parties involved move toward forgiveness of themselves and others. #offtheshelf (edited) 3mo

Sace I did this one in audio and loved it. You‘ve got me wanting to read it again but in book form. 3mo
Suet624 @Sace I read it really quickly because I was enjoying it so much and while I was reading it I was thinking that I‘m probably going to want to reread it at some point just to enjoy the story even more. I loved the writing and that‘s what I‘d like to spend some more time with. 3mo

A very charming novel set in 1950s Louisiana, Leganski‘s lyrical writing is absolutely stunning. I was swept up in Bonaventure‘s story immediately and the magical realism used to tell it was joyful to read. Though this is quite a sad novel with upsetting/triggering events, it ultimately is about the power of human connection and liberation of forgiving oneself. 4⭐️ #wintergames2021 #averymerrybingo

Y‘all!! My son got the most AR points in the entire elementary school this year!!! I‘m so proud I could burst. If you don‘t know what that‘s for, it‘s points for books read and tested over. He read so many books! He‘s had a really rough year with bullying and he really deserves it. I couldn‘t be prouder of my boy. I‘m poolside at AR field trip today, of course I brought a book.

RealLifeReading Wow! That‘s an achievement! My first grader met all his AR goals so he gets to go for the popcorn party and DJ party and he‘s very excited! 8y
Nebklvr Woohoo!!! Does he get a gift certificate to the bookstore? The people bullying him may work under him someday. 8y
ephemeralwaltz Woohoo! Good for him, that's great!! Gorgeous cover btw! Hugs 8y
Jas16 That is fantastic! 8y
Foragingfantasy Thanks y‘all! He doesn‘t know yet, awards are on June 1st, he‘ll get a plaque and a gift card. I hope I can keep the secret until then! 8y

This is the first pick of our new #bookclub formed at my work... It read fast, but I'm not really into all of the spiritual references in here. What can be taken away from this novel is a conversation about what it means to be a good human being, moving on from tragedy, and forgiveness.
