Mixed Magics
Mixed Magics | Diana Wynne Jones
5 posts | 15 read | 1 to read
Dapper, debonair, and wise, the great enchanter Chrestomanci has nine lives and a strong personality as well as strong magic. That personality reverberates in each of these four dazzling stories. A warlock tries to escape Chrestomanci's justice by fleeing to another world-with hilarious results. Cat Chant and Tonino Montana reluctantly join forces when Chrestomanci sends them on a visit that turns suddenly dangerous. The youngest best-selling dreamer needs Chrestomanci's help when she finds she can't dream anymore. And as the gods of an ever-so-orderly world try to destroy the young Sage of Dissolution, Chrestomanci lends a hand. Like Chrestomanci himself, acclaimed author Diana Wynne Jones has a graceful flair, which sparkles in the remarkable wit, imagination, and intelligence of these fast-paced tales.

This was a short book with four stories set in the Chrestomanci universe. I think when I reread the series again I‘d place this before Pinhoe Egg because two of the stories happen directly before it. This universe has multiple worlds so each story brought a little bit more knowledge of how the different magic works and were fun little explorations.

My favorite short story in this collection so far—a clever little story about a girl who can control her dreams, who is criticized for overusing tropes and archetypes in a sharp stab at real authors who do the same.

Been having trouble focusing so dipped into this story collection to liven things up. Contains 4 fun stories all Chrestomanci related but in different worlds and with a variety of characters. Definitely a fun, quick diversion.
